Mustang 2044 Troubleshooting

The Mustang 2044 skid steer loader driveline system components: a 133.6 cu.in (2.19L) Yanmar 4TNV88 4-cylinder vertical direct injection water-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 47 hp (34.2 kW), and 1-speed hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 18.5 gal/min (70 l/min). The system pressure is 2350 psi (162 bar). The Mustang 2044 is equipped with a radial-lift boom, 80K drive chains, and 10x16.5 HD standard tires. The skid steer has a maximum lift height of 112" (2845 mm) to hinge pin and dump height of 88.2" (2240 mm). The rated operating capacity is 1450 lbs (659 kg), and tipping load is 2900 lbs (1320 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Diesel engine hard to start or doesn't start
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Clogged fuel filter - Replace the filter element.
Faulty or dirty injection nozzles - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Improper valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Rebuild or change fuel pump.

Diesel starts but stalls immediately
Plugged air cleaner - Clean or change cleaner.
Fuel filter plugging - Change filter element.
Fuel injection pump leakage - Check the fuel injection pump for leaks and fix it.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Change pump or rebuild it.

Engine stops running suddenly
Engine not warmed up - Warm up to required temperature.
Dirty fuel filter - Change filter element.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Replace injection nozzles.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.

Engine stops at low idle speed
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Adjustment required.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Replacement or repair required.
Clogged or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Valve clearance is wrong - Need to adjust valve clearance.

Diesel engine is losing power
Clogged air filter - Clean or change.
Clogged injection nozzle - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Adjust to correct pressure.
Incorrect valve clearance - Correct valve clearance.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Test and adjust.
Dirty fuel hoses or lines - Service fuel lines and hoses.
Cylinder head gasket is blown - Change cylinder head gasket.
Worn or damaged piston rings - Replace the piston rings as required.

Engine is overheated
Lack of engine coolant - Fill the cooling system and check components for leaks or other faults.
Insufficient engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Clogged radiator fins or damaged radiator cap - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Loose or damaged fan belt - Install new fan belt.
Engine is under excessive load - Reduce load on the engine.

Low oil pressure
Engine oil insufficient - Fill crankcase to proper oil level.
Clogged oil filter element - Clean or change engine oil filter.
Oil grade or viscosity is incorrect - Use proper viscosity oil.
Crankshaft bearing oil clearance is incorrect - Install new bearings.
Defective oil pump - Check and replace if necessary.

Abnormal engine noise or knocking
Engine oil insufficient - Fill up the oil to required level.
Engine is cold - Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set up as recommended.
Incorrect low idle setting - Test and adjust.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Faulty or misaligned connecting rod - Alignment procedure or replacement is required.
Pistons are scored or worn - Pistons replacement required.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Drive system won't work in one direction or either direction
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Add fluid as required.
Worn drive chain - Check drive chain and change faulty components.
Relief valve is not working correctly - Repair or replace relief valve.
Clogged hydraulic filter or suction line - Replace hydraulic filter or clean suction line.
Defective hand or foot controls - Replace or repair.
Drive motor or pump is worn - Replace or repair faulty component.

Low power
Hydraulic oil filter is dirty - Change hydraulic filter.
Defective or open relief valve - Close or change relief valve.
Transmission components are damaged or faulty - Check and change defective components.
Worn input drive shaft - Change or repair faulty drive shaft.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed hydraulic system.

Drive system overheats
Hydraulic oil level is low - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Check, clean, or change as necessary.
Relief valve worn or defective - Repair or replace.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump is defective - Inspect and replace as necessary.
Oil cooler is clogged - Clean cooling fins as required.
Drive system is overloaded - Load needs to be reduced.

Excessive noise
Oil viscosity is incorrect - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Air in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor malfunction - Repair or change faulty component.
Mechanical parts of drive system are damaged or worn - Inspect the parts for defect or damage and repair as required.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system is overheated
Hydraulic pressure is incorrect - Adjust it correctly.
Main relief valve is faulty or misadjusted - Adjust or change relief valve.
Hydraulic fluid is contaminated - The fluid must be changed.
Lack of hydraulic oil - Check oil level and add hydraulic oil as required.
Hydraulic pump is worn - Repair or install new hydraulic pump.

Lift arm can't drop or lift
Defective lift controls - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Repair or replace pump if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve failure - Install a new valve or repair it.
Broken hydraulic cylinder - Change or repair lift cylinder.
Hydraulic oil level low - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.

Bucket does not function
Bucket controls failure - Replace or repair.
Defective hydraulic pump - Change or repair hydraulic pump if required.
Defective hydraulic control valve - Install a new valve or repair it.
Hydraulic bucket cylinder is broken - Repair or change cylinder.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.

Bucket or lift arm runs slowly
Defective hydraulic pump - Check the pump capacity and replace pump if required.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Install new cylinder seals.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Add fluid as required.
Worn or unadjusted hydraulic control valve - Repair or set correctly.
Hydraulic pressure has dropped - Adjust pressure correctly.

Lift arm or bucket is working jerkily
Air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Hydraulic oil filter clogging - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Contaminated hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed.
Cylinder rod or tube is scuffed - Change damaged component.

Hydraulic pump makes excessive noise
Not enough oil or hydraulic system leaking - Refill hydraulic oil or repair leaks in system.
Dirty hydraulic filter - Replace or clean the filter.
Suction line is clogged - Need to clean the suction line.
Pump sucks air - Bleed air.
Damaged pump components - Install new hydraulic pump or rebuild it.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery cannot be charged
Electrical wire connections are corroded or loose - Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections.
Defective battery terminal clamps - Change terminal clamps.
Battery is worn - Use a new battery.
Belt is worn or loose - Belt needs to be adjusted or changed.

Starter motor cranks slow
Battery capacity is low - Charge the battery.
Battery won’t hold charge - Service or replace the battery.
Disconnected wiring or bad battery terminals - Connect wires correctly or change terminals.

Starter will not work
Battery is low or faulty - Recharge or replace battery.
Battery wires are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wires and connect correctly.
Low battery output - Battery is drained, charge it.
Defective starter motor - Starter needs to be replaced.
