Gehl V400 Troubleshooting

The Gehl V400 skid steer loader driveline system components: a 273 cu.in (4.5L) Cummins QSB4.5 four-cylinder turbocharged liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 99 hp (74 kW), and two-speed hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 32 gpm (121 lpm) or 41 gpm (155 lpm). The system pressure is 3450 psi (238 bar). The Gehl V400 is equipped with a vertical-lift boom, 100H drive chains, and 14x17.5 tires. The skid steer loader has a max lift height of 143.6" (3645 mm) to hinge pin and dump height of 114.8" (2915 mm). The rated operating capacity is 4000 lbs (1814 kg), and tipping load is 8000 lbs (3630 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts hard or won't start
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Install new filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged - Service or change injection nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Valve out of adjustment - Check and adjust as required.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Change or repair the pump.

Engine starts but then stalls
Air cleaner is clogged - Install new air cleaner element.
Dirty fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Fuel injection pump leakage - Check the fuel injection pump for leaks and fix it.
Dirty or defective injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Rebuild or change fuel pump.

Engine stalls after running
Low coolant temperature - Warm up the engine.
Fuel filter is plugged - Replace filter element.
Air in the fuel lines - Bleed the fuel lines.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.

Engine stalls when idle
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Correct low idle settings.
Fuel injection pump failure - Replace or rebuild injection pump.
Dirty or defective injectors - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Adjust valve clearance.

Engine power is insufficient
Plugged air filter - Change or service air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Correct the pressure settings.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Adjust valve clearance.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel hoses or lines are dirty - Clean fuel lines and hoses.
Cylinder head gasket is blown - Replace the gasket as required.
Piston rings are damaged or leaking - Replace piston rings.

Engine is overheated
Insufficient coolant - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Insufficient engine oil - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Clogged radiator fins or leaking radiator cap - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Damaged or worn fan belt - Change as required.
Engine overloaded - Reduce engine load.

Oil pressure is low
Not enough oil in the engine - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Oil filter clogging - Clean or change engine oil filter.
Incorrect engine oil Use oil of proper viscosity.
Incorrect oil clearance in crankshaft bearing - Bearings need to be reinstalled.
Oil pump is damaged - Check and replace if necessary.

Engine noise or knocking
Low engine oil level - Fill up the engine oil.
Low coolant temperature - Warm up the engine.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust as recommended.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Adjust as required.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Misaligned or defective connecting rod - Need to replace or align the connecting rod.
Broken or worn pistons - Install new pistons.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Machine will not move forward or backward
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Drive chain is worn - Check drive chain and change faulty parts.
Relief valve is damaged - Repair or replace relief valve.
Suction line or hydraulic filter is plugged - Change hydraulic filter or service suction line.
Defective foot or hand controls - Replace or repair.
Damaged drive pump or motor - Inspect and replace as necessary.

Reduced power
Plugged hydraulic oil filter - Replace hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is worn or opened - Replace or close relief valve.
Transmission components are faulty or damaged - Inspect and replace defective parts.
Input drive shaft is defective - Repair or replace faulty drive shaft.
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.

Overheated drive system
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Plugged hydraulic fluid filter - Replace or clean hydraulic filter.
Relief valve failure - Service or change relief valve.
Worn hydraulic motor or drive pump - Check and repair if required.
Dirty oil cooler - Cooling fins should be cleaned.
Drive system overloaded continuously - Reduce the load.

Drive system is excessively noisy
Wrong oil viscosity - Use proper oil viscosity.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Worn hydraulic motor or drive pump - Inspect and replace as necessary.
Mechanical components of drive system are damaged or worn - Check the components for worn or defect and replace if necessary.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system is overheated
Hydraulic pressure is incorrect - Adjust pressure correctly.
Main relief valve is faulty or misadjusted - Adjust relief valve or change if required.
Hydraulic oil is dirty - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Lack of hydraulic oil - Fill up the hydraulic oil.
Defective hydraulic pump - Install new pump or repair it.

Lift arm fails to drop or lift
Faulty lift controls - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump malfunction - Repair or change pump if required.
Hydraulic control valve is faulty - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is faulty - Install a new boom cylinder or repair it.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.

Bucket can't tilt
Faulty bucket tilt controls - Repair or change.
Hydraulic pump malfunction - Repair or change pump if required.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Replace or repair the valve.
Hydraulic bucket cylinder is defective - Replace or repair cylinder.
Hydraulic oil level low - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.

Bucket or lift arm runs slowly
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Check hydraulic pump flow and replace pump if necessary.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Repair leak by replacing the seals.
Low hydraulic oil level - Need to add oil.
Damaged or incorrect adjusted hydraulic control valve - Set properly or repair.
Low hydraulic pressure - Adjust pressure as required.

Bucket or boom is working jerkily
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed air from system.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter element - Clean or change the filter.
Hydraulic fluid is contaminated - Change hydraulic fluid.
Scratched cylinder rod or tube - Change failed component.

Hydraulic pump is excessively noisy
Not enough oil or hydraulic system leaking - Add hydraulic oil or correct system leaks.
Hydraulic filter clogging - Service or replace hydraulic filter.
Plugged suction line - Clean suction line as required.
Air enters the pump - Bleed air from hydraulics.
Pump parts are damaged - Replace or rebuild the pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery will not charge
Loose or corroded electrical wiring connections - Tighten or service cable connections.
Electrical terminal connectors are defective - Terminal connectors should be replaced.
Defective battery - Battery change required.
Loose or damaged belt - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter motor turns slow
Battery voltage is low - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Battery is not holding charge - Service charging system or install new battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or terminals are faulty - Check cables and clean or change terminals.

Starter doesn't crank
Battery is discharged or defective - Recharge or change battery.
Wiring is incorrectly connected or disconnected - Inspect wiring and connect correctly.
Low battery power - Battery is drained, charge it.
Starter motor is defective - Repair or replace starter.
