Gehl 4835 SXT Troubleshooting

The Gehl SL 4835 SXT skid steer loader is powered by 133 cu.in (2.18L) Deutz BF3M1011F three-cylinder direct injection turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 57 hp (42.5 kW) at 2500 rpm. The Gehl 4835SXT is equipped with a radial-lift boom, single-speed hydrostatic transmission, 80E drive chains, and 10x16.5 or 12x16.5 tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 19 gpm (72 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 2750 psi (190 bar). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 1625 lbs (737 kg) and tipping load of 3250 lbs (1475 kg). The lift height is 115 inches (2920 mm) to hinge pin, and dump height is 87.2 inches (2215 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine difficult to start or will not start
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Fuel filter plugging - Service the filter.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Incorrect valve clearance - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Change or repair the pump.

Engine starts but stalls suddenly
Air cleaner is clogged - Install new air cleaner element.
Clogged fuel filter - Install new filter element.
Fuel injection pump is leaking - Repair any leaks.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Defective fuel injection pump - Change or repair the pump.

Engine stops running suddenly
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up to required temperature.
Fuel filter element clogging - Clean or replace the filter.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Clogged injection nozzle - Replace injection nozzles.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust according to specifications.

Engine stalls when idling
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Adjustment required.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Replace or rebuild injection pump.
Clogged or defective injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Valve clearance is not correct - Check and adjust as required.

Diesel engine is losing power
Dirty air cleaner - Clean or change cleaner.
Defective injection nozzle - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Correct the pressure settings.
Improper valve clearance - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Test and adjust.
Dirty fuel hoses or lines - Fuel lines and hoses need to be cleaned.
Cylinder head gasket is worn - Gasket should be replaced.
Leaking or defective piston rings - Piston rings replacement required.

Engine overheating
Lack of engine coolant - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Not enough engine oil - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Defective radiator cap or clogged radiator fins - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Loose or defective fan belt - Replace as required.
Engine is under excessive load - Load reducing is recommended.

Low oil pressure
Insufficient engine oil - Fill the crankcase with oil.
Oil filter element clogged - Service or change engine oil filter element.
Incorrect oil viscosity - Drain crankcase and refill with correct oil.
Crankshaft bearing oil clearance is excessive - Bearings need to be reinstalled.
Worn oil pump - Repair or change.

Abnormal engine knocking or noise
Engine oil level is low - Fill up the engine oil.
Engine is not preheated - Warm up to required temperature.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Adjust as required.
Dirty or defective injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is defective or misaligned - Replace or align connecting rod.
Broken or worn pistons - Replace the pistons.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Machine will not move forward or backward
Hydraulic fluid level low - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Drive chain is worn - Inspect drive chain and replace defective parts.
Defective relief valve - Repair or replace.
Clogged suction line or hydraulic filter - Check, clean, or change if necessary.
Hand or foot controls failure - Repair or change.
Damaged drive pump or motor - Change or repair faulty component.

Lack of power
Hydraulic oil filter is clogged - Replace or service hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is open or defective - Replace or close relief valve.
Transmission components are defective or worn - Check and change defective components.
Damaged input drive shaft - Rebuild or change the shaft.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.

Drive system keeps overheating
Hydraulic oil level is low - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Replace or service hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is stuck - Service or change relief valve.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Replace or repair faulty component.
Plugged hydraulic oil cooler - Cooling fins should be cleaned.
Overloaded drive system - Load needs to be reduced.

Drive system is noisy
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of correct viscosity.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Air bleeding is required.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump is worn - Inspect and replace as necessary.
Worn or damaged mechanical components of drive system - Inspect the parts for defect or damage and repair as required.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheats
Hydraulic pressure is incorrect - Correct setting is required.
Main relief valve improper adjustment or failure - Adjust the valve or replace if necessary.
Hydraulic fluid is dirty - The fluid must be changed.
Lack of hydraulic fluid - Need to add fluid.
Defective hydraulic pump - Install new pump or repair it.

Lift arm can't drop or lift
Lift controls are damaged - Repair or change.
Hydraulic pump malfunction - Repair or replace pump if necessary.

Hydraulic control valve is unadjusted or worn - Repair or set properly.
Hydraulic pressure loss - Adjust pressure correctly.

Jerky operation of the bucket or boom
Air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Hydraulic oil filter element clogging - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - Change hydraulic fluid.
Cylinder tube or rod scoring - Replace worn component.

Hydraulic pump is noisy
Insufficient oil level or leaking hydraulic system - Add hydraulic oil or correct system leaks.

Suction line is dirty - Need to clean the suction line.
Air trapped in hydraulic pump - Bleed air from hydraulics.
Pump components are faulty - Change or rebuild pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery cannot be charged
Loose or corroded wire connections - Tighten or service cable connections.
Battery terminal connectors are faulty - Terminal connectors need to be changed.
Battery faulty cell - Install a new battery.
Belt is loose or defective - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter cranks slowly
Battery capacity is low - Recharge the battery.
Battery runs out quickly - Service battery or change it.
Disconnected battery cables or bad terminals - Connect cables properly or replace terminals.

Starter motor won't turn
Battery is drained or defective - Recharge or change battery.
Wiring is incorrectly connected or disconnected - Inspect wiring and connect correctly.
Battery voltage is low - Charge the battery.
Defective starter motor - Replace or repair starter.
