Gehl 4835 Troubleshooting

The Gehl SL4835 skid steer loader driveline system components: Deutz BF3M1011F vertical 3-cylinder turbocharged liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 57 hp (42.5 kW), and 1-speed hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 19 gal/min (72 l/min). The system relief pressure is 2750 psi (190 bar). The Gehl SL4835 is equipped with a radial-lift loader boom, 80E drive chains, and 10.00x16.5 standard tires. The skid steer has a maximum lift height of 115" (2920 mm) to hinge pin and dump height of 87.2" (2215 mm). The rated operating capacity is 1625 lbs (737 kg), and tipping load is 3250 lbs (1475 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine difficult to start or doesn't start
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Dirty fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Burnt or defective injection nozzle - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
Improper valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Fuel injection pump damage - Replacement or repair required.

Engine starts and then shuts off
Air filter is dirty - Install new air filter element.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump is faulty - Change pump or rebuild it.

Engine stops running suddenly
Engine not warmed up - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Fuel filter is plugged - Change filter element.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Improper fuel injection timing - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.

Engine stalling at idle
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Correct the settings.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Replace or repair injection pump.
Fuel injectors are faulty or clogged - Replace fuel injectors.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Check and adjust.

Engine power is insufficient
Air cleaner is clogged - Clean or change.
Clogged injection nozzle - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Improper fuel injection pressure - Adjust to proper pressure.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Correct low idle settings.
Clogged fuel hoses or lines - Clean fuel system lines and hoses.
Cylinder head gasket defective - Replace cylinder head gasket.
Damaged or leaking piston rings - Change piston rings.

Engine overheated
Not enough coolant - Refill to the correct level and inspect system for leaks.
Lack of engine oil - Fill up the oil to required level.
Dirty radiator fins or defective radiator cap - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Damaged or worn fan belt - Change as required.
Engine overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.

Low oil pressure
Engine oil level low - Need to add oil.
Engine oil filter is plugged - Service or replace engine oil filter.
Incorrect oil viscosity - Drain and refill with oil of correct grade and viscosity.
Excessive main bearing oil clearance - Change bearings.
Oil pump failure - Repair or replace.

Engine knocks or noises
Engine oil level is low - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Engine is not preheated - Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set it up as required.
Incorrect low idle setting - Test and adjust.
Clogged or defective injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Connecting rod is defective or not aligned - Connecting rod needs to be replaced or aligned.
Broken or worn pistons - Replace the pistons as required.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Drive system won't operate in either direction
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Worn drive chain - Inspect drive chain and replace faulty components.
Relief valve defective or worn - Rebuild or install a new relief valve.
Suction line or hydraulic filter is clogged - Clean suction line or change hydraulic filter.
Defective hand or foot controls - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Worn drive motor or pump - Inspect and change as required.

Low power
Dirty hydraulic oil filter - Replace or clean hydraulic filter.
Opened or defective relief valve - Change or close relief valve.
Transmission parts are defective or worn - Inspect and replace defective parts.
Input drive shaft malfunction - Replace drive shaft.
Air in the hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.

Drive system keeps overheating
Hydraulic fluid level low - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic fluid filter is dirty - Check, clean, or change as necessary.
Faulty relief valve - Repair or replace.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump is worn - Inspect and change as required.
Hydraulic oil cooler is plugged - Cooling fins need to be cleaned.
Drive system is overloaded - Reduce loading.

Excessive noise
Oil viscosity is too heavy - Use the specified type of oil.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Need to bleed air.
Worn hydraulic motor or drive pump - Replace or repair faulty component.
Defective or worn mechanical components of drive system - Check the components for worn or defect and replace if necessary.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheating
Hydraulic pressure is not adjusted correctly - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.
Faulty or improperly adjusted main relief valve - Set up or change the relief valve.
Dirty hydraulic oil - Hydraulic oil change required.
Lack of hydraulic oil - Fill up the hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Change or repair hydraulic pump if required.

Lift arm does not lower or raise
Damaged lift controls - Repair or replace.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Install new pump or repair it.
Hydraulic control valve malfunction - Repair or change the valve.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Replace or repair boom cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.

Bucket can't tilt
Bucket tilt controls are damaged - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump failure - Repair or change pump if required.
Defective hydraulic control valve - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.
Bucket cylinder failure - Install a new cylinder or repair it.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Add fluid as required.

Slow bucket or lift arm operation
Defective hydraulic pump - Check the pump performance and replace it if required.
Hydraulic cylinder leaking - Cylinder seals need to be replaced.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Faulty or incorrect setting hydraulic control valve - Set correctly or repair.
Low hydraulic pressure - Adjust pressure as required.

Bucket or boom is working jerkily
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed air from hydraulic system.
Dirty hydraulic oil filter - Replace or clean the filter.
Hydraulic oil is contaminated - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Scored cylinder tube or rod - Change damaged component.

Hydraulic pump is excessively noisy
Hydraulic system leaking or not enough oil - Correct hydraulic leaks or top up oil as needed.
Plugged hydraulic filter - Replace or clean the filter.
Suction line is dirty - Service the suction line.
Pump is sucking air - Bleed air.
Damaged pump components - Replace or rebuild the pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery cannot be charged
Electrical wire connections are corroded or loose - Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections.
Defective battery terminal connectors - Install new terminal connectors.
Battery failing - Battery change required.
Loose or worn belt - Belt needs to be adjusted or changed.

Starter motor turns slow
Battery voltage is low - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery discharges quickly - Service battery or replace it.
Battery terminals are corroded or wires are disconnected - Check cable connections and replace or service terminals.

Starter does not work
Battery is low or faulty - Need to charge or replace the battery.
Wiring is incorrectly connected or disconnected - Inspect wiring and connect correctly.
Low battery output voltage - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Starter motor failing - Replace or repair starter.
