Gehl 3410 Troubleshooting
The Gehl 3410 skid steer loader driveline system components: a 59.8 cu.in (0.98L) Isuzu 3KC1/QT-23 vertical inline 3-cylinder water-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 23 hp (17 kW), and single-speed hydro transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 8.5 gal/min (32.2 l/min). The system pressure is 2200 psi (152 bar). The Gehl 3410 is equipped with a radial-lift boom, 60H drive chains, and 5.70x15 standard tires. The skid steer loader has a maximum lift height of 102" (2590 mm) to hinge pin and dump reach at full height of 15.5" (395 mm). The rated operating capacity is 900 lbs (408 kg), and tipping load is 1800 lbs (815 kg).

Engine starts up hard or will not start
Air in the fuel lines - Bleed the fuel lines.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace the filter element.
Burnt or defective injection nozzle - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Rebuild or change fuel pump.
Diesel starts and then shuts off
Plugged air cleaner - Clean or replace air cleaner element.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Service or replace the filter.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Defective or clogged fuel injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Repair or install new pump.
Engine shuts off while running
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up engine as required.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Clean or replace the filter.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Clogged or defective injection nozzles - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust according to specifications.
Engine stalls while idling
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Correct low idle settings.
Defective fuel injection pump - Repair or change injection pump.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Have it adjusted.
Diesel engine is losing power
Dirty air cleaner - Clean or change cleaner.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Correct the pressure settings.
Valve out of adjustment - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Adjustment required.
Dirt in the fuel lines or hoses - Clean fuel system lines and hoses.
Leaking cylinder head gasket - Cylinder-head gasket replacement required.
Leaking or damaged piston rings - Replace the piston rings as required.
Engine is overheated
Engine coolant is insufficient - Refill to the correct level and inspect system for leaks.
Insufficient engine oil - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Dirty radiator fins or defective radiator cap - Clean radiator or install new cap.
Fan belt is worn or faulty - Belt change is required.
Engine overload - Reduce load on the engine.
Oil pressure is insufficient
Engine oil insufficient - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Oil filter is clogged - Replace or clean engine oil filter element.
Incorrect engine oil Use correct viscosity oil.
Incorrect oil clearance in main bearing - Change bearings.
Oil pump is defective - Remove and inspect oil pump.
Engine knocking or noise
Engine oil level is insufficient - Check and refill engine oil.
Engine is cold - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.
Too low idle RPM - Normalize low idle speed.
Defective fuel injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Connecting rod failure or misalignment - Need to change or align the connecting rod.
Pistons are worn or broken - Replace the pistons as required.

Drive system doesn't work in either direction
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Need to add oil.
Drive chain is worn - Check drive chain and change defective components.
Worn or defective relief valve - Service or change relief valve.

Hand or foot controls malfunction - Change or repair.

Power is too low
Plugged hydraulic oil filter - Replace or clean hydraulic filter.
Worn or open relief valve - Close or change relief valve.
Transmission components are damaged or faulty - Check and replace defective components.
Input drive shaft malfunction - Replace or service the drive shaft.
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Drive system overheats
Low hydraulic fluid level - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Plugged hydraulic fluid filter - Check, clean, or replace as required.
Relief valve malfunction - Repair or replace relief valve.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor is damaged - Repair or change faulty component.
Dirty oil cooler - Cooling fins need to be cleaned.
Drive system overload - Load needs to be reduced.
Excessive noise
Oil viscosity is wrong - Drain and refill with proper oil.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor malfunction - Change or repair faulty component.
Defective or worn mechanical components of drive system - Inspect drive system and replace faulty components.

Defective or not adjusted hydraulic control valve - Adjust correctly or repair.

Lift arm or bucket movements are jerky
There is air in the hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Hydraulic oil filter element is clogged - Clean or replace the filter.
Contaminated hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil.
Cylinder rod or tube is scratched - Replace damaged component.
Hydraulic pump is excessively noisy
Hydraulic leaks or low oil level - Refill hydraulic oil or repair leaks in system.
Hydraulic filter clogging - Clean or replace the filter.
Suction line is clogged - Need to service the suction line.
Air enters the pump - Bleed air.
Pump parts are faulty - Replace or rebuild the pump.
Electrical Troubleshooting |
Battery is not charging
Corroded or loose electrical wire connections - Clean or tighten connections.
Defective battery terminal clamps - Install new terminal clamps.
Faulty cell in battery - Use a new battery.
Defective or loose belt - Install a new belt or adjust belt tension.
Starter motor cranks slow
Battery capacity is low - Recharge the battery.
Battery drains quickly - Service charging system or change battery.
Wires are disconnected or battery terminals are corroded - Connect cables correctly or replace terminals.
Starter motor is not working
Battery is discharged or worn - Need to charge or replace the battery.
Battery wires are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wires and connect correctly.
Battery power is low - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Starter motor is defective - Replace or repair starter.
