Caterpillar 236 Troubleshooting

The Caterpillar 236 skid steer loader driveline system components: 181 cu.in (3.0L) Caterpillar 3034 four-cylinder direct injection naturally aspirated diesel engine with a rated power of 59 hp (44 kW), and 1-speed or 2-speed hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 22 gal/min (83 l/min). The system relief pressure is 3336 psi (230 bar). The Cat 236 is equipped with radial-lift loader boom, 80HS drive chains, and 10x16.5 tires. The loader has a boom breakout force of 4335 lbs (1970 kg) and bucket breakout force of 5250 lbs (2385 kg). The rated operating capacity is 1750 lbs (793 kg), and tipping load is 3500 lbs (1590 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Diesel hard to start or doesn't start
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Fuel filter plugged - Filter maintenance required.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Clean or replace injection nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Improper valve clearance - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Change or repair the pump.

Engine stalls after starting
Plugged air filter - Change or service air filter element.
Fuel filter plugging - Service or replace the filter.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Defective or clogged fuel injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Replace or repair injection pump.

Engine stalls during operation
Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Warm up engine as required.
Fuel filter element clogging - Replace the filter element.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Damaged or dirty injection nozzles - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Adjust according to specifications.

Engine stalls while idling
Too low idle RPM - Normalize low idle speed.
Defective fuel injection pump - Change or repair the pump.
Defective fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.

Engine power is insufficient
Air filter is clogged - Service or replace the air filter.
Faulty or dirty injection nozzles - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Adjust pressure to proper level.
Valve out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Normalize low idle speed.
Clogged fuel hoses or lines - Clean fuel hoses and lines.
Damaged cylinder-head gasket - Gasket should be replaced.
Piston rings are worn or defective - Change piston rings.

Engine overheated
Lack of engine coolant - Fill the cooling system and check components for leaks or other faults.
Insufficient engine oil - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Clogged radiator core or leaking radiator cap - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Excessive wear of the fan belt - Belt replacement is recommended.
Engine is overloaded - Reduce load on the engine.

Oil pressure is low
Not enough oil in the engine - Add oil as required.
Dirty oil filter element - Service or replace engine oil filter.
Improper type of engine oil - Use correct viscosity oil.
Excessive oil clearance of crankshaft bearing - Bearings need to be reinstalled.
Oil pump malfunction - Check and replace if necessary.

Abnormal engine noise or knocking
Engine oil level is insufficient - Fill up the oil to required level.
Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Warm up engine as required.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Use the correct fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Need to adjust idle speed.
Defective fuel injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is defective or misaligned - Need to align or replace the connecting rod.
Pistons are scored or worn - Install new pistons.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Drive system won't work in one direction or either direction
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Faulty drive chain - Inspect drive chain and replace faulty parts.
Relief valve is damaged or worn - Rebuild or install a new relief valve.
Hydraulic filter or suction line is dirty - Check, clean, or replace if required.
Defective hand or foot controls - Change or repair.
Drive pump or motor malfunction - Inspect and replace as necessary.

Loss of power
Dirty hydraulic oil filter - Change or service hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is open or defective - Close or change relief valve.
Transmission components are faulty or damaged - Check and change defective components.
Defective input drive shaft - Repair or install a new drive shaft.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Air bleeding is required.

Drive system is overheated
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Hydraulic fluid filter is clogged - Replace hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is not working correctly - Change or repair defective relief valve.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump is defective - Inspect and change as required.
Dirty oil cooler - Cooling fins should be cleaned.
Transmission overloading - Reduce loading.

Drive system is excessively noisy
Improper oil viscosity - Use the specified type of oil.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Need to bleed air.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump failure - Inspect and change as required.
Mechanical parts of drive system are worn or damaged - Inspect the parts for worn or defect and repair as needed.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system has overheating
Hydraulic pressure is not adjusted correctly - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.
Main relief valve failure or improper setting - Adjust relief valve or change if required.
Hydraulic oil is dirty - Change hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic fluid level is low - Need to add fluid.
Hydraulic pump is worn - Replace or repair pump if necessary.

Lift arm does not lower or raise
Defective lift controls - Change or repair.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve malfunction - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.
Hydraulic cylinder is defective - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.

Bucket can't tilt
Damaged bucket controls - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Change or repair hydraulic pump if required.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Broken bucket cylinder - Repair or install a new cylinder.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.

Bucket or lift arm moves slowly
Defective hydraulic pump - Flow-rate hydraulic pump and replace pump if necessary.
Hydraulic cylinder leaking - Install new cylinder seals.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Worn or unadjusted hydraulic control valve - Set correctly or repair.
Hydraulic pressure has dropped - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.

Bucket or boom movements are jerky
Air in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.
Hydraulic oil filter is clogged - Replace or clean the filter.
Hydraulic oil contamination - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Cylinder tube or rod scoring - Replace damaged component.

Excessive hydraulic pump noise
Leaking hydraulic system or insufficient oil level - Repair hydraulic leaks or add oil as required.
Clogged hydraulic filter - Change or clean oil filter.
Clogged suction line - Suction line must be serviced.
Air enters the pump - Bleed air.
Damaged pump components - Install new hydraulic pump or rebuild it.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery will not charge
Electrical cable connections are loose or corroded - Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections.
Electrical terminal connectors are faulty - Terminal connectors need to be changed.
Battery is defective - Change the battery.
Damaged or loose belt - Belt needs to be adjusted or replaced.

Starter turning slow
Low battery output - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery drains quickly - Service or change the battery.
Disconnected battery cables or bad terminals - Connect wires correctly or change terminals.

Starter motor is not working
Battery is low or faulty - Charge or replace the battery.
Wiring is incorrectly connected or disconnected - Inspect wiring and connect correctly.
Low battery voltage - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Starter motor is damaged - Replace or repair starter.
