Case SV185 Troubleshooting

The Case SV185 skid steer loader driveline system components: ISM Shibaura N844LT 4-cycle 4-cylinder turbocharged water-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 57 hp (42.3 kW), and 1-speed or 2-speed hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 19.1 gal/min (72 l/min) or 28.7 gal/min (109 l/min). The Case SV185 is equipped with a vertical-lift loader boom, ASA 80 drive chains, and 10.00x16.5 standard tires. The loader has a boom breakout force of 3450 lbs (1570 kg) and bucket breakout force of 5550 lbs (2520 kg). The rated operating capacity is 1850 lbs (840 kg), and tipping load is 3700 lbs (1680 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or will not start
Air in the fuel lines - Bleed the fuel lines.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Adjust valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Repair or install new pump.

Engine starts and stops suddenly
Clogged air cleaner - Clean or change cleaner.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Change or clean the filter element.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Defective or clogged fuel injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Defective fuel injection pump - Replace or rebuild injection pump.

Engine stalls while running
Low coolant temperature - Warm up to required temperature.
Fuel filter is plugged - Change filter element.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust the pump as required.

Engine stalling at idle
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Replace or rebuild injection pump.
Defective fuel injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Adjust to proper valve clearance.

Engine loses power
Clogged air cleaner - Clean or change.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is incorrect - Test fuel injection pressure and adjust it correctly.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Adjust valve clearance.
Incorrect low idle setting - Normalize low idle speed.
Clogged fuel hoses or lines - Service fuel hoses and lines.
Damaged cylinder-head gasket - Install a new gasket.
Damaged or leaking piston rings - Replace piston rings.

Engine overheated
Low coolant level - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Insufficient engine oil - Need to add engine oil.
Radiator core is dirty or radiator cap is damaged - Clean radiator or change cap.
Loose or damaged fan belt - Install new fan belt.
Engine is under excessive load - Reduce engine load.

Oil pressure too low
Engine oil insufficient - Fill the crankcase with oil.
Oil filter is clogged - Service or replace engine oil filter.
Incorrect engine oil Drain crankcase and refill with correct oil.
Excessive oil clearance of crankshaft bearing - Replace bearings.
Oil pump is worn or damaged - Replace as required.

Engine noises or knocks
Lack of engine oil - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Low coolant temperature - Warm up engine as required.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Use the correct fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Correct the settings.
Clogged or defective injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Connecting rod failure or misalignment - Replace or align connecting rod.
Broken or worn pistons - Have pistons replaced.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Drive system doesn't function in one direction or either direction
Hydraulic oil level is low - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Worn drive chain - Check drive chain and change faulty components.
Relief valve failure - Repair or change.
Suction line or hydraulic filter is plugged - Clean suction line or change hydraulic filter.
Defective hand or foot controls - Repair or replace.
Drive motor or pump failure - Check and repair if required.

Lack of power
Hydraulic oil filter is clogged - Replace or clean hydraulic filter.
Worn or open relief valve - Replace or close relief valve.
Transmission components are faulty or damaged - Check and replace defective components.
Input drive shaft is worn - Replace or service the drive shaft.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Air bleeding is required.

Drive system overheats
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Hydraulic fluid filter is plugged - Change or clean hydraulic filter.
Worn or defective relief valve - Repair or change.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Change or repair faulty component.
Oil cooler is clogged - Cooling fins need to be cleaned.
Drive system is overloaded - Reduce loading.

Drive system is noisy
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of proper viscosity.
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Defective drive pump or hydraulic motor - Inspect and change as required.
Mechanical components of drive system are defective or worn - Check the components for defect or damage and change if necessary.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system is overheated
Incorrect hydraulic pressure setting - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.
Main relief valve failure or improper setting - Adjust or replace the relief valve.
Contaminated hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Hydraulic fluid level is insufficient - Add fluid to the hydraulic system.
Faulty hydraulic oil pump - Replace or repair pump if necessary.

Boom cannot be lowered or raised
Lift controls failure - Repair or replace.
Damaged hydraulic oil pump - Install new pump or repair it.
Defective hydraulic control valve - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.
Broken hydraulic cylinder - Change or repair lift cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.

Bucket can't tilt
Bucket tilt controls malfunction - Repair or change.
Hydraulic pump not working - Install new pump or repair it.
Hydraulic control valve is defective - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Broken bucket cylinder - Change or repair cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.

Slow boom or bucket operation
Worn hydraulic oil pump - Check the pump capacity and replace pump if required.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Repair leak by replacing the seals.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Add fluid as required.
Worn or unadjusted hydraulic control valve - Repair or set correctly.
Hydraulic pressure is low - Correct setting is required.

Lift arm or bucket jerks when working
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Air bleeding is required.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter element - Clean or change the filter.
Dirty hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil.
Scratched cylinder rod or tube - Replace failed component.

Hydraulic pump makes excessive noise
Hydraulic leakage or low oil level - Top up hydraulic oil or remedy leakage in system.
Plugged hydraulic filter - Replace or clean the filter.
Dirty suction line - Need to clean the suction line.
Pump sucks air - Remove air from hydraulics.
Damaged pump components - Install new hydraulic pump or rebuild it.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery won’t charge
Loose or corroded cable connections - Clean or tighten wiring connections.
Defective electrical terminal connectors - Change terminal connectors.
Faulty cell in battery - Battery change required.
Defective or loose belt - Adjust belt tension or install a new belt.

Starter cranks slow
Battery voltage is low - Charge the battery.
Battery drains quickly - Service battery or change it.
Corroded battery terminals or disconnected wires - Connect wires properly or change terminals.

Starter doesn't crank
Battery is discharged or defective - Recharge or replace battery.
Disconnected or improperly connected wiring harness - Inspect battery wiring harness and connect as required.
Low battery capacity - Recharge the battery.
Defective starter motor - Repair or replace starter.
