Case 1838 Troubleshooting

The Case 1838 skid steer loader driveline system components: a 134 cu.in (2.2L) Kubota V2203-DI-B 4-cycle 4-cylinder direct injection naturally aspirated water-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 46 hp (34 kW), and single-speed hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 15.8 gal/min (59.8 l/min). The Case 1838 is equipped with a radial-lift loader boom, 80HT drive chain, and 10.00x16.5 or 7.50x15 tires. The loader has a boom breakout force of 2775 lbs (1260 kg) and bucket breakout force of 3065 lbs (1395 kg). The rated operating capacity is 1325 lbs (600 kg), and tipping load is 2650 lbs (1200 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or won't start
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Fuel filter element clogging - Replace filter element.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Repair or install new pump.

Engine starts and stops suddenly
Clogged air filter - Service or replace the air filter.
Clogged fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Fuel injection pump is leaking - Repair any leaks.
Clogged or defective injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Replace or repair injection pump.

Engine shuts off suddenly during operation
Engine is cold - Warm up to required temperature.
Fuel filter element clogging - Install new filter element.
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Defective or clogged injection nozzle - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set up as recommended.

Engine stops while idle
Incorrect low idle setting - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Replace injection pump or repair it.
Fuel injector fault - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Valve out of adjustment - Check and adjust as required.

Diesel engine loses power
Dirty air filter - Clean or replace element.
Defective injection nozzle - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Adjust to proper pressure.
Excessive valve clearance - Correct valve clearance.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Correct low idle adjustment.
Fuel hoses or lines clogging - Clean fuel system hoses and lines.
Cylinder head gasket defective - Replace cylinder head gasket.
Piston rings are worn or defective - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine overheating
Engine coolant is insufficient - Refill to the correct level and inspect system for leaks.
Insufficient engine oil - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Radiator core is dirty or radiator cap is damaged - Clean radiator or change cap.
Excessive wear of the fan belt - Replace the fan belt.
Engine is under excessive load - Reduce load on the engine.

Insufficient oil pressure
Low oil level - Need to add oil.
Plugged engine oil filter - Change or service engine oil filter.
Incorrect engine oil Use correct viscosity oil.
Incorrect oil clearance in crankshaft bearing - Change bearings.
Oil pump failure - Repair or replace.

Engine noises or knocks
Engine oil level is low - Check and refill engine oil.
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up the engine.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust as recommended.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Adjust as required.
Defective fuel injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Misaligned or faulty connecting rod - Connecting rod needs to be aligned or changed.
Scored or worn pistons - Pistons need to be replaced.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Machine is not moving in one direction or either direction
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Drive chain malfunction - Inspect drive chain and replace faulty components.
Relief valve worn or defective - Repair or replace relief valve.
Clogged hydraulic filter or suction line - Change hydraulic filter or service suction line.
Worn or damaged foot or hand controls - Repair or change.
Drive pump or motor is damaged - Repair or change faulty component.

Loss of power
Hydraulic oil filter is clogged - Replace or clean hydraulic filter.
Open or damaged relief valve - Change or close relief valve.
Transmission components are damaged or faulty - Check and replace defective components.
Stuck input drive shaft - Repair or replace drive shaft.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.

Drive system is overheated
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Hydraulic fluid filter is clogged - Replace hydraulic filter.
Relief valve failure - Change or repair relief valve.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Inspect and change as required.
Oil cooler is clogged - Cooling fins should be cleaned.
Drive system is overloaded - Reduce drive system load.

Excessive noise
Improper oil viscosity - Use the specified type of oil.
Air in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump is worn - Inspect and change as required.
Mechanical parts of drive system are worn or damaged - Inspect the components for worn or defect and repair as required.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheated
Incorrect hydraulic pressure setting - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.
Faulty or improperly adjusted main relief valve - Adjust relief valve or change if required.
Hydraulic oil is dirty - The oil must be changed.
Hydraulic fluid level is insufficient - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic pump is defective - Install new pump or repair it.

Boom won't lower or raise
Defective lift controls - Repair or replace.
Hydraulic pump failure - Repair or install new hydraulic pump.
Hydraulic control valve malfunction - Repair or replace the valve.
Hydraulic cylinder malfunction - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.

Bucket fails to tilt
Faulty bucket tilt controls - Repair or change.
Hydraulic pump not working - Install new pump or repair it.
Defective hydraulic control valve - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Bucket cylinder failure - Repair or install a new cylinder.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Add fluid as required.

Bucket or lift arm functions slowly
Faulty hydraulic oil pump - Check the pump capacity and replace pump if required.
Hydraulic cylinder oil leakage - Repair leak by replacing the seals.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve is defective or set improper - Adjust correctly or repair.
Hydraulic pressure has dropped - Set pressure correctly.

Lift arm or bucket is working jerkily
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.
Hydraulic oil filter element is dirty - Change or clean oil filter.
Hydraulic oil is contaminated - Hydraulic oil change required.
Scored cylinder tube or rod - Replace failed component.

Excessive hydraulic pump noise
Not enough oil or hydraulic system leaking - Remedy hydraulic leakage or refill oil as necessary.
Hydraulic filter is clogged - Clean or change the filter.
Dirty suction line - Suction line needs to be cleaned.
Air trapped in hydraulic pump - Bleed air.
Faulty pump components - Change or rebuild pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery cannot be charged
Loose or corroded electrical wiring connections - Tighten or clean connections.
Battery terminal clamps are defective - Replace terminal clamps.
Battery failing - Battery change required.
Belt is loose or defective - Belt needs to be adjusted or replaced.

Starter cranks slow
Low battery voltage - Charge the battery.
Battery won’t hold charge - Service charging system or replace battery.
Disconnected battery cables or bad terminals - Check wiring and clean or replace terminals.

Starter is not cranking
Battery is discharged or defective - Charge or change the battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect cables and connect properly.
Low battery voltage - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Damaged starter motor - Repair or replace starter.
