Case 1816B Troubleshooting

The Case 1816B skid steer loader driveline system components: Tecumseh OH160 four-stroke single-cylinder horizontal shaft air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 16 hp (11.9 kW), and single-speed hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 8 gal/min (30.3 l/min). The system relief pressure is 1200 psi (82.8 bar). The Case 1816B is equipped with a radial-lift loader boom, 60H drive chain, and 5.90x15 standard tires. The loader has a boom breakout force of 1050 lbs (475 kg) and bucket breakout force of 830 lbs (377 kg). The rated operating capacity is 500 lbs (227 kg), and tipping load is 1035 lbs (470 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or won't start
No gasoline in tank - Add fuel.
Incorrect fuel grade - Change fuel.
Water or air in fuel system - Remove air or water from system.
Spark plug wire connection are damaged - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Damaged spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Plugged fuel filter - Fuel filter needs changing.
Brake pedal not pushed down - Push the brake pedal down.
Carburetor not adjusted - Adjust according to instructions.
Bad engine compression - Inspect cylinder block and replace worn components.
Incorrectly adjusted or damaged throttle cable - Replace cable or adjust properly.

Engine runs unevenly
Air intake screen is plugged - Wash or clean as required.
Ignition system problems - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Throttle cable is stuck or faulty - Replace or clean the cable.
Clogged air filter - Service or replace air filter.
Dirty or defective fuel pump - Clean or replace fuel pump.

Engine starts and stalls immediately
Spark plug is defective - Replace spark plug.
Defective or clogged carburetor - Carburetor needs to be replaced or cleaned.
Faulty ignition coil - Ignition coil must be replaced.
Bad or damaged valve springs - Valve springs need to be changed.
Valves are stuck - Valves need to be cleaned.

Engine overheating
Engine oil level is low - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Engine overloaded - Reduce engine load.
Cooling fins are blocked - Wash or clean as required.
Carburetor mixture is too lean - Adjust carburetor properly.
Ignition timing is improper - Set the ignition timing properly.
Incorrect valve setting - Adjust valves correctly.

Engine knocking or noise
Stale or low octane fuel - Use correct fuel.
Engine is running overloaded - Reduce load.
Engine oil insufficient - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Adjust as required.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Crankshaft or main bearings wear - Install new parts as as required.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.
Piston rings or cylinder bore are damaged - Replace defective parts.

Engine loses power
Clogged or incorrectly adjusted carburetor - Clean or properly adjust carburetor.
Plugged air filter - Change or clean air filter.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Defective ignition system - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Cylinder head gasket is blown - Install new head gasket.
Valves are stuck or burned - Change or service valves.
Worn or defective push rod - Install a new push rod.
Cylinder block components are faulty - Replace defective parts.
Dirty oil filter element (if equipped) - Replace or clean oil filter.

Engine uses too much fuel
Choke doesn't open well - Adjust or replace choke cable.
Carburetor main jet adjustment is improper - Adjust main jet as required.
Spark plug is faulty or loose - Spark plug need to be tightened or replaced.
Valves are worn, burned or stuck - Change or clean valves.
Worn sleeve, rings, or piston - Change faulty parts.
Improper valve clearance - Adjust to proper valve clearance.

Excessive engine oil consumption
Gaskets or seals are excessively worn - Replace worn parts to avoid leaks.
Damaged valve guides or valve stems - Valves replacement required.
Worn or stuck piston rings - Piston rings replacement required.
Cylinder liner or piston is damaged - Inspect piston and liner, fit new components as necessary.
Blocked breather pipe or hose - Replace or service.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Drive system сan't work in either direction
Low hydraulic oil level - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Worn drive chain - Inspect drive chain and replace defective components.
Relief valve failure - Relief valve need to be replaced or repair.
Plugged suction line or hydraulic filter - Clean suction line or change hydraulic filter.
Faulty foot or hand controls - Repair or change.
Drive motor or pump failure - Repair or replace faulty component.

Power is too low
Hydraulic oil filter is plugged - Change hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is opened or defective - Close or change relief valve.
Worn or defective transmission parts - Check and change faulty components.
Input drive shaft failure - Change or repair faulty drive shaft.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed air from system.

Overheated drive system
Low hydraulic fluid level - Add fluid as required.
Hydraulic fluid filter is dirty - Change hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is not working correctly - Repair or replace relief valve.
Defective drive pump or hydraulic motor - Change or repair faulty component.
Hydraulic oil cooler is plugged - Cooling fins should be cleaned.
Transmission overloading - Reduce loading.

Drive system makes excessive noise
Oil viscosity is incorrect - Use oil of proper viscosity.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed air from system.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor is damaged - Replace or repair faulty component.
Worn or defective mechanical components of drive system - Check the components for worn or defect and replace if necessary.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system is overheated
Hydraulic pressure is incorrect - Correct setting is required.
Main relief valve is faulty or misadjusted - Adjust or change relief valve.
Hydraulic fluid is contaminated - Hydraulic fluid change required.
Lack of hydraulic oil - Fill the hydraulic system with oil.
Hydraulic pump is worn - Repair or change pump if required.

Boom does not raise or lower
Lift controls are faulty - Change or repair.
Damaged hydraulic oil pump - Repair or change pump if required.
Hydraulic control valve failure - Repair or replace the valve.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Replace or repair boom cylinder.
Hydraulic oil is insufficient - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.

Bucket can't tilt
Bucket tilt controls malfunction - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Repair or replace pump if necessary.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic bucket cylinder not working - Repair or change cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.

Bucket or lift arm runs slowly
Hydraulic pump is defective - Check the pump capacity and replace pump if required.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Install new cylinder seals.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Hydraulic control valve is faulty or out of adjustment - Adjust properly or repair.
Hydraulic pressure loss - Adjust pressure correctly.

Bucket or boom jerks when working
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Dirty hydraulic oil filter element - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Dirty hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed.
Scored cylinder tube or rod - Replace damaged component.

Hydraulic pump is noisy
Low oil level or hydraulic leaks - Top up hydraulic oil or remedy leakage in system.
Hydraulic filter is dirty - Change or clean oil filter.
Suction line is clogged - Suction line needs to be cleaned.
Air enters the pump - Bleed air.
Pump parts are damaged - Replace or rebuild the pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery is not charging
Electrical cable connections are corroded or loose - Service or tighten cable connections.
Faulty battery terminal clamps - Install new terminal clamps.
Bad cell in battery - Battery change required.
Loose or defective belt - Replace belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter motor cranks slow
Battery voltage is low - Recharge the battery.
Battery drains quickly - Battery needs service or replacement.
Disconnected cables or faulty battery terminals - Connect wiring properly or install new terminals.

Starter will not work
Battery is drained or worn - Recharge or replace battery.
Wiring is improperly connected or disconnected - Check wiring and connect properly.
Low battery output voltage - Recharge the battery.
Starter motor is damaged - Repair or install a new starter.
