Mustang 2066 Troubleshooting

The Mustang 2066 skid steer loader is powered by 199 cu.in (3.26L) Cummins B3.3 4-cylinder liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 60 hp (45 kW) or 202 cu.in (3.3L) Yanmar 4TNV98 4-cylinder liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 68 hp (51 kW). The Mustang 2066 is equipped with a radial-lift boom, 1-speed or 2-speed transmission, 100H drive chains, and 12x16.5 tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 21.5 gpm (81 lpm). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 2000 lbs (907 kg) and tipping load of 4000 lbs (1815 kg). The lift height is 123" (3125 mm) to hinge pin, and dump height is 95" (2415 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine hard to start or doesn't start
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Fuel filter plugged - Service the filter.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged or dirty - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Adjustment procedure required.
Defective fuel injection pump - Change pump or rebuild it.

Engine starts and stalls suddenly
Air cleaner is clogged - Clean or replace air cleaner element.
Clogged fuel filter - Replace the filter element.
Poor fuel injection pump tightness - Look for any leaks of fuel pump, tighten it fast.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Fuel injection pump damage - Rebuild or replace pump.

Diesel shuts off while driving
Engine not warmed up - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Fuel filter element clogging - Replace the filter element.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Clogged or defective injection nozzles - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust according to specifications.

Engine stops when idling
Too low idle RPM - Adjust as required.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Rebuild or change fuel pump.
Dirty or defective injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.

Loss of engine power
Air cleaner is dirty - Install new air cleaner element.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Replace injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Adjust pressure to proper level.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Incorrect low idle setting - Correct low idle adjustment.
Dirty fuel lines or hoses - Clean fuel lines and hoses.
Cylinder head gasket is blown - Gasket should be replaced.
Worn or damaged piston rings - Replace piston rings.

Engine overheats
Low coolant level - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Engine oil level low - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Defective radiator cap or clogged radiator fins - Clean radiator or change cap.
Excessive wear of the fan belt - Replace the fan belt.
Engine is overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.

Oil pressure is low
Engine oil level low - Fill crankcase to proper oil level.
Clogged oil filter element - Clean or replace engine oil filter element.
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing oil clearance is incorrect - Bearings need to be reinstalled.
Oil pump is worn or damaged - Remove and inspect oil pump.

Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise
Engine oil level is low - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Coolant temperature is low - Warm up the engine.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust as recommended.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Correct low idle settings.
Defective fuel injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is misaligned or worn - Connecting rod needs to be aligned or changed.
Pistons are worn or broken - Pistons need to be replaced.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Machine will not move forward or backward
Low hydraulic fluid level - Add fluid as required.
Drive chain is worn - Check drive chain and change defective parts.
Worn or defective relief valve - Change or repair defective relief valve.
Suction line or hydraulic filter is dirty - Clean suction line or replace hydraulic filter.
Foot or hand controls are damaged - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Drive motor or pump is worn - Repair or replace faulty component.

Lack of power
Hydraulic oil filter is plugged - Change hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is worn or opened - Replace or close relief valve.
Worn or defective transmission parts - Check and change defective components.
Defective input drive shaft - Service or change faulty drive shaft.
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.

Overheated drive system
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Add fluid as required.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter - Replace or service hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is stuck - Repair or install a new relief valve.
Worn hydraulic motor or drive pump - Inspect and replace as necessary.
Oil cooler is clogged - Cooling fins should be cleaned.
Transmission overloading - Load needs to be reduced.

Excessive noise
Oil viscosity is wrong - Use proper oil viscosity.
Air in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Worn hydraulic motor or drive pump - Inspect and replace as necessary.
Worn or damaged mechanical parts of drive system - Check the parts for defect or damage and change if required.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system has overheating
Hydraulic pressure is incorrect - Correct setting is required.
Main relief valve malfunction or improper adjustment - Adjust or replace the relief valve.
Hydraulic fluid contamination - Change hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic oil level is insufficient - Fill the hydraulic system with oil.
Hydraulic pump is worn - Replace or repair pump if necessary.

Lift arm fails to drop or lift
Faulty lift controls - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Install new pump or repair it.
Hydraulic control valve is defective - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.
Broken hydraulic cylinder - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.

Bucket does not function

Bucket or lift arm functions slowly

Hydraulic cylinder leaking - Repair leak by replacing the seals.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Add fluid as required.
Hydraulic control valve is not set properly or defective - Adjust properly or repair.

Bucket or boom is jerky
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.

Contaminated hydraulic fluid - Fill up with fresh hydraulic fluid.
Scratched cylinder rod or tube - Change defective component.

Excessive hydraulic pump noise
Hydraulic leakage or low oil level - Repair hydraulic leaks or add oil as required.
Clogged hydraulic filter - Service or change hydraulic filter.
Suction line is clogged - Service the suction line.
Air in hydraulic pump - Need to bleed air.
Faulty pump components - Change or rebuild pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery is not charging
Loose or corroded wire connections - Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections.
Faulty battery terminal connectors - Install new terminal connectors.
Worn-out battery - Change the battery.
Worn or loose belt - Change belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter cranks slow
Low battery power - Recharge the battery.
Battery won’t hold charge - Service charging system or install new battery.
Disconnected wiring or bad battery terminals - Connect wires correctly or change terminals.

Starter is not working
Battery is discharged or worn - Change or recharge battery.
Wiring harness is disconnected or improperly connected - Check wiring harness and connect as required.
Battery voltage is low - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Starter motor is faulty - Starter should be replaced.
