John Deere 318E Troubleshooting
The John Deere 318E skid steer loader is powered by 202.5 cu.in (3.3L) Yanmar 4TNV98C 4-cylinder direct injection liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 60 hp (44.8 kW). The John Deere 318E is equipped with a single-speed or two-speed hydrostatic transmission, vertical-lift loader boom, 80HD drive chains, and 10.00x16.5 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 18 gpm (68.2 lpm) or 25 gpm (94.5 lpm). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 1950 lbs (885 kg) and tipping load of 3900 lbs (1770 kg). Engine starts up hard or doesn't start
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.

Fuel injection pump malfunction - Rebuild or install a new injection pump.
Engine stops unexpectedly during operation
Coolant temperature is low - Warm up the engine.
Fuel filter is plugged - Service or replace the filter.
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Clogged or defective injection nozzles - Service or change injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Set up as recommended.
Engine stops at low idle speed
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Correct low idle adjustment.
Fuel injection pump failure - Change pump or rebuild it.
Clogged or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance.
Lack of engine power
Air cleaner is dirty - Service or replace air cleaner.
Faulty fuel injection nozzles - Replace injection nozzles.
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Adjust to correct pressure.
Improper valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Adjustment required.
Fuel hoses or lines clogging - Clean fuel system hoses and lines.
Blown cylinder head gasket - Install new cylinder head gasket.
Defective or worn piston rings - Piston rings replacement required.
Engine overheating
Coolant level is low - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Engine oil insufficient - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Dirty radiator core or defective radiator cap - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Fan belt is broken or worn - Change as required.
Diesel engine overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.
Insufficient oil pressure
Low oil level - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Dirty oil filter element - Clean or replace engine oil filter element.
Wrong oil viscosity - Drain and refill with oil of correct grade and viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing oil clearance is excessive - Bearings need to be reinstalled.
Defective oil pump - Repair or replace.
Engine knocking or noise
Engine oil level is insufficient - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Engine not warmed up - Warm up the engine.
Improper fuel injection timing - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Need to adjust idle speed.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Faulty or misaligned connecting rod - Replace or align connecting rod.
Scored or worn pistons - Have pistons replaced.

Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed hydraulic system.
Drive system keeps overheating
Low hydraulic fluid level - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Plugged hydraulic fluid filter - Change or service hydraulic filter.
Relief valve failure - Rebuild or install a new relief valve.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump failure - Repair or replace faulty component.

Starter motor is not working

Disconnected or incorrectly connected wires - Inspect battery wires and connect correctly.

Damaged starter motor - Repair or change starter.
