Gehl 4610 Troubleshooting

The Gehl SL 4610 skid steer loader driveline system components: Perkins 4.108 4-cylinder diesel engine with a rated power of 44 hp (32.7 kW) or Perkins 104-19 4-cylinder diesel engine with a rated power of 41 hp (30.6 kW), and 1-speed hydro transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 16 gal/min (60.6 l/min) or 32 gal/min (121.3 l/min). The Gehl SL 4610 is equipped with a radial-lift boom, 80H drive chains, and 7x15 tires. The skid steer loader has a max lift height of 114.5" (2910 mm) to hinge pin and dump reach at full height of 18" (455 mm). The rated operating capacity is 1225 lbs (556 kg), and tipping load is 2450 lbs (1112 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine difficult to start or will not start
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel filter element clogging - Change filter element.
Burnt or defective injection nozzle - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Rebuild or change fuel pump.

Engine starts and stalls suddenly
Air cleaner is clogged - Clean or replace element.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Change or clean the filter element.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Repair or replace injection pump.

Engine stalls during operation
Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Dirty fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Replace injection nozzles.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.

Engine stops when idling
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Correct low idle adjustment.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Replace or rebuild injection pump.
Defective fuel injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Excessive valve clearance - Have it adjusted.

Engine power is insufficient
Clogged air cleaner - Service or replace air cleaner.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Uneven fuel injection pressure - Test fuel injection pressure and adjust it correctly.
Valve out of adjustment - Have it adjusted.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Normalize low idle speed.
Restricted fuel hoses or lines - Service fuel hoses and lines.
Cylinder-head gasket is leaking - Install a new gasket.
Leaking or damaged piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine overheated
Engine has a lack of coolant - Refill to the correct level and inspect system for leaks.
Insufficient engine oil - Fill up the oil to required level.
Defective radiator cap or clogged radiator fins - Clean radiator or change cap.
Loose or damaged fan belt - Change as required.
Engine overload - Reduce load on the engine.

Oil pressure is insufficient
Low crankcase oil level - Fill the crankcase with oil.
Engine oil filter is plugged - Service or change engine oil filter element.
Incorrect oil viscosity - Use correct viscosity oil.
Incorrect oil clearance in main bearing - Bearings need to be reinstalled.
Oil pump malfunction - Remove and inspect oil pump.

Engine knocking or noise
Not enough engine oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up engine as required.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Dirty or defective injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is worn or misaligned - Replace or align connecting rod.
Piston wear or scoring - Have pistons replaced.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Machine is not moving forward or backward
Hydraulic oil level is low - Need to add oil.
Worn drive chain - Inspect drive chain and replace defective components.
Relief valve malfunction - Rebuild or install a new relief valve.
Clogged hydraulic filter or suction line - Clean suction line or change hydraulic filter.
Defective foot or hand controls - Change or repair.
Damaged drive pump or motor - Replace or repair faulty component.

Reduced power
Dirty hydraulic oil filter - Check, clean, or change as necessary.
Opened or worn relief valve - Close or replace relief valve.
Transmission parts are worn or defective - Inspect and change defective parts.
Input drive shaft is defective - Replace drive shaft.
Air in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.

Overheated drive system
Low hydraulic fluid level - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter - Change or service hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is defective - Rebuild or install a new relief valve.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump failure - Repair or change faulty component.
Clogged hydraulic oil cooler - Clean cooling fins as required.
Drive system is overloaded - Reduce loading.

Drive system makes excessive noise
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of proper viscosity.
Air in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Defective drive pump or hydraulic motor - Repair or replace faulty component.
Defective or worn mechanical components of drive system - Check the parts for worn or defect and replace if required.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheats
Hydraulic pressure is incorrect - Adjust pressure as required.
Main relief valve is damaged or adjusted improperly - Adjust or replace the relief valve.
Dirty hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic oil level is low - Add oil to the hydraulic system.
Defective hydraulic pump - Repair or change pump if required.

Lift arm fails to drop or lift
Lift controls are damaged - Change or repair.
Hydraulic pump malfunction - Repair or change pump if required.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is broken - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.

Bucket is not working
Bucket controls failure - Change or repair.
Defective hydraulic pump - Repair or install new hydraulic pump.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Change or repair hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic bucket cylinder is broken - Change or repair cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Need to add oil.

Bucket or lift arm is working slowly
Hydraulic pump is worn - Test the pump performance and change pump if required.
Hydraulic cylinder oil leakage - Cylinder seals need to be replaced.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Add fluid as required.
Faulty or incorrect setting hydraulic control valve - Adjust correctly or repair.
Hydraulic pressure loss - Adjust pressure correctly.

Bucket or boom movements are jerky
Air in hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Hydraulic oil filter element is clogged - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic fluid is dirty - The fluid must be changed.
Cylinder rod or tube is scratched - Replace damaged component.

Excessive hydraulic pump noise
Low oil level or hydraulic leaks - Correct hydraulic leaks or top up oil as needed.
Plugged hydraulic filter - Clean or replace the filter.
Suction line is dirty - Need to service the suction line.
Air in hydraulic pump - Need to bleed air.
Pump parts are damaged - Replace or rebuild the pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery cannot be charged
Electrical wire connections are loose or corroded - Service or tighten connections.
Defective battery terminal clamps - Terminal clamps need to be replaced.
Battery failing - Replace the battery.
Loose or damaged belt - Install a new belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter turns slowly
Low battery power - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Battery is draining quickly - Service charging system or replace battery.
Faulty battery terminals or disconnected cables - Check cables and clean or change terminals.

Starter motor is not working
Battery is drained or worn - Charge or change the battery.
Disconnected or improperly connected wiring harness - Inspect battery wiring harness and connect as required.
Low battery capacity - Charge the battery.
Starter motor is defective - Replace or repair starter.
