Caterpillar 272C Troubleshooting
The Cat 272C skid steer loader driveline system components: 207.5 cu.in (3.4 L) Caterpillar C3.4 DIT vertical 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 90 hp (67 kW), and 1-speed or 2-speed hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 22 gal/min (84 l/min) or 33 gal/min (125 l/min). The Caterpillar 272C is equipped with a vertical-lift loader boom, 100HS drive chains, and 12.00x16.5 standard tires. The skid steer loader has a maximum lift height of 129.1" (3280 mm) to hinge pin and dump height of 97.9" (2485 mm). The rated operating capacity is 3250 lbs (1475 kg), and tipping load is 6500 lbs (2950 kg).

Engine hard to start or won't start
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Change filter element.
Burnt or defective injection nozzle - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
Improper valve clearance - Have it adjusted.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Rebuild or change fuel pump.
Diesel starts and stalls immediately
Air filter is plugged - Install new air filter element.
Fuel filter element clogging - Clean or change the filter.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Clogged or defective injectors - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Replace or rebuild injection pump.
Engine shuts off while running
Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature - Warm up to required temperature.
Fuel filter plugging - Install new filter element.
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Set it up as required.
Engine stops at idle
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjust low idle speed.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Rebuild or replace pump.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Valve out of adjustment - Correct valve clearance.
Engine loses power
Dirty air filter - Install new air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Replace injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Adjust to proper pressure.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Correct low idle settings.
Dirt in the fuel hoses or lines - Fuel hoses and lines must be clean.
Defective cylinder head gasket - Change cylinder head gasket.
Piston rings are broken or leaking - Install new piston rings.
Engine is overheated
Low coolant level - Fill the cooling system and check components for leaks or other faults.
Engine oil level is insufficient - Need to add engine oil.
Dirty radiator fins or faulty radiator cap - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Excessive wear of the fan belt - Replace the fan belt.
Engine overloaded - Reduce load on the engine.
Low oil pressure
Not enough oil in the engine - Add oil as required.
Plugged engine oil filter - Replace or service engine oil filter.
Incorrect engine oil Use oil of correct viscosity.
Excessive crankshaft bearing oil clearance - Replace bearings.
Oil pump failure - Remove and inspect oil pump.
Engine noise or knocking
Engine oil level is low - Check and refill engine oil.
Engine is not preheated - Warm up to required temperature.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set it up as required.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Correct the settings.
Dirty or defective injectors - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Connecting rod is misaligned or worn - Replace or align connecting rod.
Pistons are scored or worn - Install new pistons.

Machine does not move forward or backward
Hydraulic oil level is low - Need to add oil.

Foot or hand controls are defective - Repair or change.
Drive pump or motor malfunction - Repair or replace faulty component.
Loss of power
Hydraulic oil filter is plugged - Replace or clean hydraulic filter.
Open or damaged relief valve - Replace or close relief valve.
Worn or defective transmission parts - Inspect and change defective parts.
Input drive shaft is stuck - Change or repair faulty drive shaft.
Air in hydraulic system - Air bleeding is required.
Drive system is overheated
Low hydraulic oil level - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.
Plugged hydraulic fluid filter - Replace hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is not working correctly - Repair or replace relief valve.
Defective drive pump or hydraulic motor - Inspect and change as required.
Hydraulic oil cooler is dirty - Clean cooling fins as required.
Drive system is overloaded - Reduce loading.
Drive system is excessively noisy
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of proper viscosity.
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor malfunction - Change or repair faulty component.
Defective or worn mechanical parts of drive system - Inspect the components for defect or damage and repair as needed.

Clogged suction line - Need to clean the suction line.
Pump sucks air - Need to bleed air.
Worn pump parts - Rebuild or replace hydraulic pump.

Battery cannot be charged
Loose or corroded wire connections - Service or tighten connections.
Defective battery terminal clamps - Replace terminal clamps.
Dead cell in battery - Change the battery.
Belt is defective or loose - Adjust belt tension or install a new belt.
Starter cranks slow
Low battery capacity - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery is not holding charge - Service battery or replace it.
Disconnected wires or corroded battery terminals - Connect wires correctly or change terminals.
Starter is not working
Battery is drained or worn - Charge or change the battery.
Battery wiring is disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect wiring and connect as required.
Low battery voltage - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Faulty starter motor - Starter should be changed.
