Caterpillar 246D Troubleshooting
The Caterpillar 246D skid steer loader is powered by Caterpillar C3.3B DIT four-cylinder direct injection turbocharged liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 72.9 hp (54.4 kW) at 2400 rpm. The Cat 246D is equipped with a radial-lift loader boom, one-speed or two-speed hydrostatic transmission, 100HS drive chains, and 12.00x16.5 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 23 gpm (86 lpm) or 32 gpm (121 lpm). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 2150 lbs (975 kg) and tipping load of 4300 lbs (1950 kg). The lift height is 124.2 inches (3155 mm) to hinge pin, and dump height is 97.1 inches (2465 mm).

Engine difficult to start or won't start
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel filter element clogging - Service the filter.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Incorrect valve clearance - Have it adjusted.
Fuel injection pump failure - Replace injection pump or repair it.
Diesel starts and then shuts off
Air cleaner is clogged - Install new air cleaner element.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace the filter element.
Fuel injection pump is leaking - Repair any leaks.
Defective or clogged fuel injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Defective fuel injection pump - Install a new pump or rebuild.
Engine stops suddenly during operation
Coolant temperature is low - Warm up engine as required.
Clogged fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust the pump as required.
Engine stops when idling
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Adjust as required.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Rebuild or install a new injection pump.
Defective fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Excessive valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Loss of engine power
Air cleaner is dirty - Clean or change cleaner.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Incorrect fuel injection pressure - Adjust pressure to proper level.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Check and adjust.
Incorrect low idle setting - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel lines or hoses are clogged - Clean fuel hoses and lines.
Leaking cylinder head gasket - Replace the gasket as required.
Piston rings are leaking or defective - Piston rings replacement required.
Engine overheated
Low coolant level - Add coolant fluid to cooling system and also check it for leaks.
Low engine oil level - Check and refill engine oil.
Radiator core is clogged or radiator cap is leaking - Clean radiator or change cap.
Loose or defective fan belt - Replace as required.
Engine is overloaded - Reduce engine load.
Oil pressure is low
Low oil level - Add oil as required.
Clogged oil filter element - Service or change engine oil filter element.
Different type of engine oil - Use oil of proper viscosity.
Excessive crankshaft bearing oil clearance - Change bearings.
Oil pump malfunction - Repair or replace.
Abnormal engine knocking or noise
Engine oil insufficient - Fill up the oil to required level.
Low coolant temperature - Warm up the engine.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set up as recommended.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjust as required.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Misaligned or faulty connecting rod - Connecting rod needs to be aligned or changed.
Worn or scored pistons - Pistons replacement required.
Drive System Troubleshooting |
Machine will not move in either direction or one direction
Low hydraulic oil level - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Faulty drive chain - Inspect drive chain and replace defective parts.
Relief valve is defective - Repair or replace relief valve.
Hydraulic filter or suction line is plugged - Clean suction line or replace hydraulic filter.
Hand or foot controls malfunction - Replace or repair.
Worn drive motor or pump - Check and repair if required.
Power is too low
Hydraulic oil filter is plugged - Check, clean, or replace as required.
Relief valve is damaged or open - Change or close relief valve.
Transmission parts are defective or worn - Inspect and change defective parts.
Input drive shaft is defective - Repair or replace drive shaft.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Drive system overheating
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Plugged hydraulic fluid filter - Replace hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is defective - Repair or replace relief valve.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor is damaged - Check and repair if required.
Hydraulic oil cooler is plugged - Cooling fins should be cleaned.
Transmission overloading - Reduce the load.
Drive system is noisy
Wrong oil viscosity - Use the specified type of oil.
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor is damaged - Repair or change faulty component.
Worn or damaged mechanical components of drive system - Check the parts for worn or defect and replace if required.

Hydraulic system is overheated
Hydraulic pressure is not adjusted correctly - Adjust it correctly.
Misadjusted or defective main relief valve - Adjust relief valve or change if required.
Dirty hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed.

Hydraulic bucket cylinder is defective - Repair or install a new cylinder.
Hydraulic oil level low - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Bucket or lift arm runs slowly
Worn hydraulic oil pump - Check pump flow and change pump if necessary.
Hydraulic cylinder leaking - Cylinder seals need to be replaced.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Worn or unadjusted hydraulic control valve - Repair or adjust properly.
Hydraulic system loosing pressure - Adjust pressure correctly.
Lift arm or bucket jerks when working
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Air bleeding is required.
Hydraulic oil filter element is dirty - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Contaminated hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed.
Cylinder rod or tube is scratched - Change worn component.
Hydraulic pump is excessively noisy
Insufficient oil level or leaking hydraulic system - Add hydraulic oil or correct system leaks.
Plugged hydraulic filter - Clean or install new filter.
Dirty suction line - Suction line must be serviced.
Pump sucks air - Need to bleed air.
Pump components are damaged - Replace or rebuild the pump.
Electrical Troubleshooting |
Battery will not charge
Wiring connections are loose or corroded - Tighten or service cable connections.
Battery terminal connectors are faulty - Terminal connectors should be replaced.
Bad cell in battery - Battery change required.
Damaged or loose belt - Belt needs to be adjusted or changed.
Starter cranks slow
Low battery output voltage - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery drains quickly - Service battery or replace it.
Bad battery terminals or disconnected wiring - Check wiring and clean or replace terminals.
Starter does not work
Battery is drained or worn - Change or recharge battery.
Battery wires are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wires and connect correctly.
Low battery voltage - Recharge the battery.
Starter motor is faulty - Starter should be replaced.
