Caterpillar 246C Troubleshooting
The Cat 246C skid steer loader is powered by 207.5 cu.in (3.4L) Caterpillar C3.4 DIT 4-cylinder direct injection turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 73 hp (54 kW) at 2500 rpm. The Caterpillar 246C is equipped with a radial-lift loader boom, single-speed or two-speed hydrostatic transmission, 100HS drive chains, and 12.00x16.5 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 22 gpm (84 lpm) or 33 gpm (125 lpm). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 2150 lbs (975 kg) and tipping load of 4300 lbs (1950 kg). The lift height is 122.9 inches (3120 mm) to hinge pin, and dump height is 95.4 inches (2425 mm).

Engine starts up hard or doesn't start
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.

Engine stalls after running
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up to required temperature.
Clogged fuel filter - Clean or change the filter.
Air in the fuel lines - Bleed the fuel lines.
Defective injection nozzle - Clean or replace injection nozzles.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust according to specifications.
Engine stops when idling
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Normalize low idle speed.
Fuel injection pump is faulty - Change or repair the pump.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Low engine power
Plugged air cleaner - Install new air cleaner element.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Uneven fuel injection pressure - Test fuel injection pressure and adjust it correctly.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Test and adjust.
Dirt in the fuel hoses or lines - Service fuel lines and hoses.
Leaking cylinder head gasket - Change cylinder head gasket.
Piston rings are defective or leaking - Change piston rings.
Engine overheats
Low coolant level - Add coolant fluid to cooling system and also check it for leaks.
Not enough engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Defective radiator cap or clogged radiator core - Change cap or clean radiator.
Loose or damaged fan belt - If necessary, replace the belt.
Engine overload - Reduce engine load.
Oil pressure is insufficient
Oil level is insufficient - Need to add oil.
Engine oil filter is plugged - Change or clean engine oil filter element.
Wrong oil viscosity - Use correct viscosity oil.
Excessive crankshaft bearing oil clearance - Install new bearings.
Oil pump is damaged - Check and replace if necessary.
Engine knocks or noises
Lack of engine oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up engine as required.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust as recommended.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Adjustment required.

Dirty oil cooler - Clean the cooling fins.
Drive system overload - Reduce loading.
Drive system makes excessive noise
Oil viscosity is too heavy - Drain and refill with proper oil.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed air from hydraulic system.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Replace or repair faulty component.

Battery will not charge

Starter turning slow
Low battery output voltage - Charge the battery.
Battery discharges quickly - Service charging system or replace battery.
Bad battery terminals or disconnected wiring - Connect wires properly or change terminals.
Starter will not crank
Battery is low or faulty - Charge or change the battery.
Wiring is improperly connected or disconnected - Check wiring and connect properly.
Battery voltage is low - Battery is drained, charge it.
