Case SR250 Troubleshooting

The Case SR250 skid steer loader is powered by FPT F5H FL413 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 84 hp (63 kW) at 2500 rpm. The Case SR250 is equipped with a radial-lift loader boom, one-speed or two-speed hydrostatic transmission, ASA 100 drive chains, and 12.00x16.5 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 24.2 gpm (91.5 lpm) or 37.6 gpm (142.5 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 3450 psi (238 bar). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 2500 lbs (1135 kg) and tipping load of 5000 lbs (2270 kg). The lift height is 125.1" (3180 mm) to hinge pin, and dump height is 100.9" (2560 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or doesn't start
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Clean the filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
Improper valve clearance - Have it adjusted.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Replacement or repair required.

Engine starts but then stops
Plugged air cleaner - Install new air cleaner element.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Replace the filter element.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Defective or clogged fuel injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump is damaged - Replace injection pump or repair it.

Engine stalls after running
Low coolant temperature - Warm up to required temperature.
Dirty fuel filter - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Defective injection nozzle - Service or change injection nozzles.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust the pump as required.

Engine stalling at idle
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Adjust as required.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Install a new fuel pump or repair.
Defective fuel injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Valve out of adjustment - Check and adjust.

Engine power is too low
Air filter is clogged - Install new air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Adjust to correct pressure.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Incorrect low idle setting - Correct low idle settings.
Fuel hoses or lines are clogged - Service fuel lines and hoses.
Leaking cylinder head gasket - Gasket should be replaced.
Worn or broken piston rings - Change piston rings.

Engine overheated
Low coolant level - The cooling system needs to be refilled and checked for faults.
Engine oil level is insufficient - Check and refill engine oil.
Dirty radiator fins or defective radiator cap - Clean radiator or change cap.
Fan belt is worn or faulty - If necessary, replace the belt.
Engine overload - Reduce load on the engine.

Oil pressure too low
Oil level is low - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Plugged engine oil filter - Replace or service engine oil filter.
Incorrect engine oil Drain and refill with oil of correct grade and viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing has excessive oil clearance - Bearing replacement required.
Oil pump malfunction - Replace as required.

Abnormal engine noise or knocking
Insufficient engine oil - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up to required temperature.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Correct low idle adjustment.
Fuel injectors are faulty or clogged - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Misaligned or defective connecting rod - Need to replace or align the connecting rod.
Worn or scored pistons - Pistons need to be replaced.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Drive system doesn't function in one direction or either direction
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Drive chain is worn - Inspect drive chain and replace faulty parts.
Defective relief valve - Repair or replace.
Suction line or hydraulic filter is plugged - Check, clean, or change if necessary.
Hand or foot controls malfunction - Repair or replace.
Worn drive motor or pump - Inspect and replace as necessary.

Power is too low
Clogged hydraulic oil filter - Replace or service hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is open or worn - Close or change relief valve.
Transmission components are faulty or damaged - Check and replace faulty components.
Input drive shaft is defective - Replace drive shaft.
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.

Drive system overheats
Low hydraulic fluid level - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic fluid filter is clogged - Change or clean hydraulic filter.
Stuck relief valve - Service or change relief valve.
Worn hydraulic motor or drive pump - Inspect and change as required.
Hydraulic oil cooler is dirty - Clean the cooling fins.
Transmission overloading - Load should be reduced.

Excessive noise
Oil viscosity is incorrect - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Air bleeding is required.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump failure - Inspect and change as required.
Mechanical parts of drive system are damaged or worn - Check drive system and change faulty parts.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheating
Hydraulic pressure incorrectly adjusted - Set pressure correctly.
Main relief valve is damaged or adjusted improperly - Replace or set up the relief valve.
Hydraulic fluid is contaminated - Hydraulic fluid change required.
Not enough hydraulic oil in the system - Check oil level and add hydraulic oil as required.
Hydraulic pump is worn - Change or repair hydraulic pump if required.

Lift arm can't drop or lift
Lift controls malfunction - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Hydraulic pump failure - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Repair or replace the valve.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Change or repair lift cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.

Bucket can't tilt
Faulty bucket tilt controls - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Repair or change pump if required.
Hydraulic control valve failure - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Broken bucket cylinder - Repair or change cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.

Boom or bucket runs slowly
Defective hydraulic pump - Check the pump capacity and replace pump if required.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Change cylinder piston seals.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.
Faulty or incorrect setting hydraulic control valve - Set properly or repair.
Low hydraulic pressure - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.

Lift arm or bucket is jerky
Air in the hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Plugged hydraulic oil filter - Clean or install new filter.
Hydraulic fluid is dirty - Change hydraulic fluid.
Scratched cylinder rod or tube - Change worn component.

Hydraulic pump is noisy
Hydraulic leakage or lack of oil - Top up hydraulic oil or remedy leakage in system.
Plugged hydraulic filter - Service or change hydraulic filter.
Suction line is clogged - Suction line needs to be cleaned.
Air enters the pump - Need to bleed air.
Pump components are worn out - Install new hydraulic pump or rebuild it.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery does not charge
Loose or corroded wire connections - Service or tighten connections.
Faulty battery terminal clamps - Replace terminal clamps.
Dead cell in battery - Battery change required.
Defective or loose belt - Adjust belt tension or replace belt.

Starter cranks slow
Battery voltage is low - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Battery won’t hold charge - Service charging system or install new battery.
Wires are disconnected or battery terminals are corroded - Check cable connections and change or clean terminals.

Starter motor is not working
Battery is low or faulty - Recharge or change battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check cables and connect as needed.
Low battery power - Battery is drained, charge it.
Defective starter motor - Starter needs to be changed.
