Case SR160 Troubleshooting
The Case SR160 skid steer loader is powered by 135.2 cu.in (2.2L) ISM Shibaura N844LT-F/M4 four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 57 hp (42.3 kW) at 2800 rpm. The Case SR160 is equipped with a radial-lift loader boom, one-speed hydrostatic transmission, ASA 80 drive chains, and 10.00x16.5 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 17.5 gpm (66.2 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 3050 psi (210 bar). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 1600 lbs (726 kg) and tipping load of 3200 lbs (1450 kg). The lift height is 112" (2845 mm) to hinge pin, and dump height is 88.4" (2245 mm).

Engine hard to start or won't start
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Clogged fuel filter - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Fuel injection pump is damaged - Replace or repair injection pump.
Engine starts but stops suddenly
Dirty air filter - Clean or change filter.
Clogged fuel filter - Clean or change the filter.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Clogged or defective injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Fuel injection pump is damaged - Repair or change injection pump.
Diesel shuts off while driving
Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature - Warm up the engine.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace the filter element.
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Adjust according to specifications.
Engine stalls at low idle speed
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Adjust as required.
Fuel injection pump is not operating properly - Replace injection pump or repair it.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Engine power is insufficient
Air cleaner is clogged - Clean or replace air cleaner element.
Defective or clogged injection nozzle - Clean or replace injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Correct the pressure settings.
Improper valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Test and adjust.
Restricted fuel lines or hoses - Service fuel lines and hoses.
Cylinder head gasket is damaged - Install a new gasket.
Piston rings are worn or damaged - Replace the piston rings as required.
Engine overheated
Not enough coolant - Fill the cooling system and check components for leaks or other faults.
Engine oil level low - Need to add engine oil.
Dirty radiator core or defective radiator cap - Clean radiator or change cap.
Fan belt is loose or defective - Install new fan belt.
Engine overloaded - Reduce engine load.
Low oil pressure
Oil level is low - Fill up the engine oil.
Plugged engine oil filter - Service or replace engine oil filter.
Improper type of engine oil - Drain crankcase and refill with correct oil.
Incorrect oil clearance in main bearing - Bearing needs to be changed.
Oil pump is worn or damaged - Check and replace if necessary.
Abnormal engine noise or knocking
Low engine oil level - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Low coolant temperature - Warm up the engine.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust the pump as required.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Adjust the low idle speed.
Clogged or defective injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is defective or misaligned - Replace or align connecting rod.
Pistons are worn or broken - Install new pistons.

Drive system doesn't work in either direction
Low hydraulic fluid level - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid.
Drive chain fault - Inspect drive chain and replace faulty components.
Defective or worn relief valve - Service or change relief valve.
Suction line or hydraulic filter is dirty - Change hydraulic filter or service suction line.
Foot or hand controls are faulty - Replace or repair.
Drive motor or pump is defective - Replace or repair faulty component.
Power is too low
Clogged hydraulic oil filter - Change or clean hydraulic filter.
Open or damaged relief valve - Close or change relief valve.
Transmission components are faulty or damaged - Check and replace defective components.
Input drive shaft is damaged - Replace or service the drive shaft.
Air in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.
Drive system overheats
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic fluid filter is dirty - Replace hydraulic filter.
Faulty relief valve - Repair or change.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Repair or replace faulty component.
Oil cooler is clogged - Clean cooling fins as required.
Overloaded drive system - Reduce the load.
Drive system is excessively noisy
Incorrect oil viscosity - Drain and refill with proper oil.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed hydraulic system.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump is worn - Repair or change faulty component.
Worn or damaged mechanical components of drive system - Check drive system and change faulty components.

Hydraulic system overheats
Hydraulic pressure incorrectly adjusted - Adjust pressure correctly.
Main relief valve is damaged or adjusted improperly - Adjust or replace the relief valve.
Dirty hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed.
Hydraulic fluid level is insufficient - Need to add fluid.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Lift arm does not lower or raise
Lift controls are damaged - Change or repair.
Defective hydraulic pump - Change or repair hydraulic pump if required.

Bucket can't tilt
Defective bucket controls - Repair or change.

Defective hydraulic control valve - Install a new valve or repair it.
Defective bucket cylinder - Repair or replace cylinder.
Low hydraulic oil level - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Boom or bucket functions slowly
Worn hydraulic oil pump - Test the pump performance and change pump if required.
Oil leaks from hydraulic cylinder - Cylinder seals need to be replaced.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic control valve is faulty or out of adjustment - Repair or adjust properly.
Low hydraulic pressure - Set pressure correctly.
Lift arm or bucket jerks when working
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Air bleeding is required.
Hydraulic oil filter element clogging - Clean or change the filter.
Contaminated hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Scratched cylinder rod or tube - Replace failed component.
Excessive hydraulic pump noise
Hydraulic leakage or lack of oil - Repair hydraulic leaks or add oil as required.
Hydraulic filter is clogged - Service or replace hydraulic filter.
Suction line clogging - Need to service the suction line.
Air in hydraulic pump - Bleed air from hydraulics.
Worn pump components - Install new hydraulic pump or rebuild it.
Electrical Troubleshooting |
Battery won’t charge
Corroded or loose electrical wire connections - Tighten or service cable connections.
Battery terminal connectors are defective - Replace terminal connectors.
Battery is worn - Replace the battery.
Belt is worn or loose - Adjust belt tension or install a new belt.
Starter cranks slow
Low battery voltage - Charge the battery.
Battery drains quickly - Service battery or change it.
Wires are disconnected or battery terminals are corroded - Check cable connections and replace or service terminals.
Starter is not cranking
Battery is low or faulty - Replace or charge as required.
Battery wires are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wires and connect correctly.
Battery power is low - Battery is drained, charge it.
Damaged starter motor - Replace or repair starter.
