Case 1845C Troubleshooting

The Case 1845C skid steer loader is powered by 239 cu.in (3.9L) Case 4-390 4-cylinder direct injection naturally aspirated liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 60 hp (45 kW) at 2200 rpm. The Case 1845C is equipped with a hydrostatic transmission, radial-lift boom, 80HT continuous roller chains, and 12x16.5 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a gear pump with fluid flow rate of 16 gpm (60.5 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 2300 psi (159 bar). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 1750 lbs (795 kg) and tipping load of 3545 lbs (1608 kg). The boom lifting force is 3450 lbs (1568 kg), and bucket breakout force is 4690 lbs (2130 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine difficult to start or doesn't start
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Change the filter element.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump is faulty - Rebuild or change fuel pump.

Diesel starts but stalls immediately
Air cleaner is dirty - Clean or change cleaner.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Replace filter element.
Poor fuel injection pump tightness - Look for any leaks of fuel pump, tighten it fast.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Rebuild or change fuel pump.

Engine stalls after running
Engine is cold - Warm up the engine.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace filter element.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust the pump as required.

Engine stalls at idle
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Install a new pump or rebuild.
Dirty or defective injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Adjust valve clearance.

Lack of engine power
Clogged air cleaner - Clean or replace element.
Clogged injection nozzle - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Correct the pressure settings.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Correct the settings.
Restricted fuel lines or hoses - Clean fuel lines and hoses.
Cylinder head gasket is defective - Replace the gasket as required.
Leaking or defective piston rings - Change piston rings.

Engine is overheated
Insufficient coolant - Top up coolant fluid and check system for leaks.
Engine oil level low - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Radiator core is clogged or radiator cap is leaking - Clean radiator or install new cap.
Fan belt slipping or worn - Belt change is required.
Engine is overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.

Oil pressure too low
Oil level is low - Need to add oil.
Dirty oil filter - Change or service engine oil filter.
Incorrect engine oil Fill up with the proper oil viscosity.
Excessive crankshaft bearing oil clearance - Install new bearings.
Oil pump malfunction - Remove and inspect oil pump.

Abnormal engine knocking or noise
Low engine oil level - Need to add engine oil.
Engine is cold - Warm up the engine.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Use the correct fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Normalize low idle speed.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is misaligned or defective - Need to replace or align the connecting rod.
Broken or worn pistons - Have pistons replaced.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Drive system won't operate in either direction
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Worn drive chain - Check drive chain and change faulty components.
Input drive shaft failure - Replace or service the drive shaft.
Relief valve is damaged or worn - Rebuild or install a new relief valve.
Plugged suction line or hydraulic filter - Clean suction line or replace hydraulic filter.
Foot or hand controls are faulty - Replace or repair.
Drive motor or pump is defective - Check and repair if required.

Reduced power
Clogged hydraulic oil filter - Replace or clean hydraulic filter.
Open or damaged relief valve - Change or close relief valve.
Defective or worn transmission parts - Inspect and change defective parts.
Input drive shaft failure - Replace drive shaft.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Air bleeding is required.

Drive system overheats
Hydraulic oil is insufficient - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Replace or clean hydraulic filter.
Stuck relief valve - Repair or replace relief valve.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump is worn - Replace or repair faulty component.
Oil cooler is clogged - Cooling fins need to be cleaned.
Overloaded drive system - Reduce loading.

Drive system is noisy
Oil viscosity is too heavy - Drain and refill with correct oil.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Air bleeding is required.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump is worn - Check and repair if required.
Mechanical components of drive system are defective or worn - Check drive system and change faulty parts.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheated
Hydraulic pressure incorrectly adjusted - Adjust pressure correctly.
Misadjusted or defective main relief valve - Adjust the valve or replace if necessary.
Hydraulic fluid contamination - Change hydraulic fluid.
Lack of hydraulic oil - Add oil to the hydraulic system.
Hydraulic pump is worn - Repair or replace pump if necessary.

Boom fails to lift or drop
Lift controls are damaged - Repair or change.
Damaged hydraulic oil pump - Repair or install new hydraulic pump.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is defective - Replace or repair boom cylinder.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Add fluid as required.

Bucket fails to tilt
Bucket tilt controls are defective - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Defective hydraulic pump - Repair or replace pump if necessary.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Change or repair hydraulic valve.
Defective bucket cylinder - Repair or replace cylinder.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.

Boom or bucket moves slowly
Hydraulic pump is worn - Check pump performance and change it if necessary.
Hydraulic cylinder oil leakage - Replace cylinder piston seals.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Worn or unadjusted hydraulic control valve - Adjust correctly or repair.
Low hydraulic pressure - Adjust pressure as required.

Lift arm or bucket is jerky
Air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Plugged hydraulic oil filter - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic oil is contaminated - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Scratched cylinder rod or tube - Replace damaged component.

Hydraulic pump makes excessive noise
Hydraulic system leaking or not enough oil - Add hydraulic oil or correct system leaks.
Plugged hydraulic filter - Clean or replace the filter.
Clogged suction line - Clean suction line as required.
Pump sucks air - Bleed air.
Faulty pump parts - Rebuild or install new pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery cannot be charged
Wiring connections are loose or corroded - Clean or tighten connections.
Battery terminal connectors are defective - Install new terminal connectors.
Worn-out battery - Use a new battery.
Defective or loose belt - Install a new belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter cranks slow
Low battery voltage - Recharge the battery.
Battery does not hold charge - Battery needs service or replacement.
Bad battery terminals or disconnected wiring - Connect wires correctly or change terminals.

Starter motor won't turn
Battery is low or faulty - Charge or change the battery.
Wire harness is disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wire harness and connect as required.
Low battery capacity - Battery needs to be recharged.
Starter motor is damaged - Starter should be changed.
