Case 1835 Troubleshooting

The Case 1835 skid steer loader is powered by Case 148G 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a rated power of 32 hp (23.7 kW) or Case 188D 4-cylinder diesel engine with a rated power of 34 hp (25.4 kW). The Case 1835 is equipped with a one-speed hydrostatic transmission, radial-lift boom, 60H drive chain, and 7.00x15 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 11 gpm (41.6 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 2250 psi (155 bar). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 1200 lbs (545 kg) and tipping load of 2410 lbs (1095 kg). The boom breakout force is 2330 lbs (1055 kg), and bucket breakout force is 3100 lbs (1405 kg).

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting

Engine hard to start or doesn't start
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Fuel filter plugged - Filter maintenance required.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjustment procedure required.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Replace or repair injection pump.

Engine starts but then stalls
Dirty air filter - Clean or replace element.
Clogged fuel filter - Change filter element.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Change or repair the pump.

Engine shuts off while running
Engine is cold - Warm up engine as required.
Fuel filter plugging - Change filter element.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Clogged injection nozzle - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust according to specifications.

Engine stalls at idle
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Adjust the low idle speed.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Rebuild or replace pump.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Adjustment procedure required.

Lack of engine power
Air cleaner is dirty - Install new air cleaner element.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Service or change injection nozzles.
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Check the fuel injection pressure and adjust if necessary.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Test and adjust.
Dirty fuel lines or hoses - Service fuel hoses and lines.
Defective cylinder head gasket - Install new cylinder head gasket.
Piston rings are worn or damaged - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine is overheated
Not enough coolant - The cooling system needs to be refilled and checked for faults.
Engine oil level is insufficient - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Dirty radiator fins or defective radiator cap - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Loose or damaged fan belt - Belt replacement is recommended.
Engine overload - Load reducing is recommended.

Oil pressure is low
Engine oil level low - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Oil filter element clogging - Service or change engine oil filter element.
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing oil clearance is excessive - Replace bearings.
Oil pump failure - Check and replace if necessary.

Engine noise or knocking
Lack of engine oil - Check and refill engine oil.
Low coolant temperature - Warm up the engine.
Improper fuel injection timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Correct low idle adjustment.
Clogged or defective injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Connecting rod is misaligned or worn - Align or change connecting rod.
Piston wear or scoring - Replace the pistons as required.

Gasoline Engine Troubleshooting

Engine will not start or hard to start
Empty gas tank - Add fuel.
Incorrect fuel grade - Change fuel.
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Damaged spark plug wiring connection - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Faulty spark plug - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Ignition failure - Test ignition and replace failed parts.
Dirty fuel filter - Fuel filter needs to be replaced.
Fuel lines are clogged - Clean fuel lines.
Fuel pump is defective or dirty - Clean or change fuel pump.
Carburetor is clogged - Clean the carburetor.
Poor cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and change worn parts.

Engine runs roughly
Defective ignition system - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Air filter element is clogged - Clean or change.
Spark plug is damaged - Replace spark plug.
Fuel pump is dirty or defective - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjustment procedure required.
Incorrect ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Correct the settings.

Engine starts but stalls suddenly
Spark plug is faulty - Change spark plug.
Dirty or faulty carburetor - Clean or change carburetor.
Ignition coil is not working - Ignition coil should be replaced.
Valve springs are damaged or weak - Change valve springs.
Valves sticking - Service the valves.

Engine overheating
Not enough engine oil - Need to add engine oil.
Engine is under excessive load - Reduce engine load.
Carburetor mixture is too lean - Use proper settings.
Incorrect ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Wrong valve setting - Adjust valves correctly.
Clogged radiator core or leaking radiator cap - Install new cap or clean radiator.

Abnormal engine knocking or noise
Stale gasoline - Change fuel.

High fuel consumption

Worn, stuck, or burned valves - Clean or change valves.

Engine oil consumption is too high

Engine backfires
Carburetor fuel mixture is too lean - Use proper settings.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Machine is not moving in one direction or either direction
Low hydraulic oil level - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Drive chain is damaged - Check drive chain and change defective parts.
Worn or damaged relief valve - Change or repair defective relief valve.
Hydraulic filter or suction line is dirty - Service suction line or change hydraulic filter.
Worn or damaged foot or hand controls - Change or repair.
Drive motor or pump failure - Change or repair faulty component.

Power is too low
Hydraulic oil filter is clogged - Change or clean hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is opened or defective - Close or replace relief valve.
Transmission parts are damaged or faulty - Inspect and replace faulty parts.
Stuck input drive shaft - Service or change faulty drive shaft.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed hydraulic system.

Drive system keeps overheating
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Change or clean hydraulic filter.
Worn or defective relief valve - Repair or replace.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor malfunction - Inspect and change as required.
Dirty oil cooler - Cooling fins need to be cleaned.
Overloaded drive system - Reduce drive system load.

Drive system is excessively noisy
Oil viscosity is incorrect - Use correct oil viscosity.
Air in the hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Change or repair faulty component.
Worn or defective mechanical components of drive system - Inspect the parts for worn or defect and repair as needed.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheating
Hydraulic pressure is not adjusted correctly - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.
Defective or misadjusted main relief valve - Replace or set up the relief valve.
Contaminated hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Hydraulic oil level is insufficient - Check oil level and add hydraulic oil as required.
Defective hydraulic pump - Repair or install new hydraulic pump.

Boom cannot be lowered or raised
Damaged lift controls - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump failure - Repair or replace pump if necessary.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder not working - Repair or install a new lift cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Add fluid as required.

Bucket does not function
Bucket controls failure - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump failure - Install new pump or repair it.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Bucket cylinder failure - Replace or repair cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Add fluid as required.

Slow bucket or lift arm action
Worn hydraulic oil pump - Check pump flow and change pump if necessary.
Oil leaks from hydraulic cylinder - Change cylinder piston seals.
Low hydraulic oil level - Need to add oil.
Faulty or incorrect setting hydraulic control valve - Repair or adjust properly.
Low hydraulic pressure - Adjust pressure correctly.

Bucket or boom jerks when working
Air in the hydraulic system - Air bleeding is required.
Dirty hydraulic oil filter - Clean or install new filter.
Contaminated hydraulic fluid - Hydraulic fluid change required.
Cylinder tube or rod is scored - Replace worn component.

Excessive hydraulic pump noise
Insufficient oil level or leaking hydraulic system - Top up hydraulic oil or remedy leakage in system.
Dirty hydraulic filter - Replace or clean the filter.
Suction line is dirty - Service the suction line.
Pump is sucking air - Need to bleed air.
Pump components are faulty - Rebuild or replace hydraulic pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery is not charging
Electrical wire connections are loose or corroded - Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections.
Electrical terminal connectors are defective - Change terminal connectors.
Bad cell in battery - Replace the battery.
Belt is defective or loose - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter turning slow
Low battery capacity - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery does not hold charge - Battery needs to be serviced or replaced.
Wires are disconnected or battery terminals are corroded - Check cable connections and change or clean terminals.

Starter will not work
Battery is low or faulty - Replace or charge as required.
Wiring is incorrectly connected or disconnected - Inspect wiring and connect correctly.
Battery power is low - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Starter motor failure - Starter should be changed.
