Case 1818 Troubleshooting

The Case 1818 skid steer loader driveline system components: a 47.7 cubic inches (0.8L) Onan P218G four-stroke two-cylinder air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 18 hp (13.4 kW), and single-speed hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 9 gal/min (34.1 l/min). The system pressure is 1800 psi (124 bar). The Case 1818 is equipped with a radial-lift loader boom, 60H drive chain, and 5.70x15 or 27x8.50x15 tires. The loader has a boom breakout force of 1530 lbs (695 kg) and bucket breakout force of 1210 lbs (550 kg). The rated operating capacity is 550 lbs (250 kg), and tipping load is 1100 lbs (500 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine won't start or starts hard
Empty gas tank - Add gasoline.
Low-quality gasoline - Use correct gasoline grade.
Air or water in fuel system - Remove water or air from fuel system.
Spark plug wire connection are damaged - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Spark plug is defective - Install new spark plug.
Fuel filter is clogged - Fuel filter needs changing.
Defective safety switch - Replace if required.
Wrong carburetor adjustment - Adjusting carburetor correctly.
Poor cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and change worn parts.
Improperly adjusted or worn throttle cable - Adjust correctly or replace the cable.

Irregular engine running
Air intake screen is blocked - Need to clean or wash.
Ignition system failure - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Throttle cable is faulty or stuck - Clean or replace the cable.
Air filter element is clogged - Replace or clean air filter.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.

Engine starts and then stalls
Faulty spark plug - Replace spark plug.
Carburetor is defective or clogged - Carburetor needs to be replaced or cleaned.
Damaged ignition coil - Change ignition coil as required.
Valve springs are loose or broken - New valve springs need to be installed.
Valves sticking - Valves must be cleaned.

Engine keeps overheating
Lack of engine oil - Need to add engine oil.
Excessive engine load - Reduce engine load.
Plugged cooling fins - Need to clean or wash.
Too lean carburetor mixture - Adjust carburetor properly.
Incorrect ignition timing - Set the ignition timing properly.
Wrong valve setting - Set the valves correctly.

Engine noise or knocking
Low octane gasoline - Change fuel.
Excessive engine load - Reduce load.
Lack of engine oil - Need to add engine oil.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Adjust the low idle speed.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Main bearings or crankshaft are worn out - Repair or replace defective parts.
Valve clearance is improper - Check and adjust.
Worn cylinder bore or piston rings - Replace defective components.

Loss of engine power
Carburetor is dirty or improperly adjusted - Clean or correctly adjust carburetor.
Clogged air filter - Service or change air filter.
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Check fuel pump and change if required.
Ignition failure - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Worn cylinder head gasket - Install new cylinder head gasket.
Valves are burned or stuck - Replace or service valves.
Worn or bent push rod - Change push rod.
Worn cylinder block components - Replace defective components as required.
Oil filter is dirty (if equipped) - Change or service oil filter.

Engine uses too much fuel
Throttle is not fully open - Change or adjust throttle cable.
Improper adjustment of carburetor main jet - Adjust it correctly.
Loose or faulty spark plug - Replace or tighten spark plug.
Stuck, burned, or worn valves - Clean or change valves.
Sleeve, piston, or rings are damaged - Replace defective parts as required.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.

Engine using too much oil
Defective seals or gaskets - To repair leaks, replace worn parts.
Damaged valve stems or valve guides - Valves need to be changed.
Worn or stuck piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.
Scored piston or cylinder liner - Inspect piston and liner, change as required.
Blocked breather hose or pipe - Service or replace.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Machine does not move forward or backward
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.
Faulty drive chain - Inspect drive chain and replace defective components.
Relief valve failure - Change or repair defective relief valve.
Hydraulic filter or suction line is dirty - Check, clean, or replace if required.
Foot or hand controls are defective - Replace or repair.
Damaged drive pump or motor - Repair or change faulty component.

Low power
Plugged hydraulic oil filter - Replace hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is open or defective - Close or change relief valve.
Transmission components are faulty or damaged - Inspect and change faulty parts.
Input drive shaft failure - Replace or service the drive shaft.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Air bleeding is required.

Drive system overheats
Hydraulic fluid level low - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Plugged hydraulic fluid filter - Replace or service hydraulic filter.
Relief valve malfunction - Repair or change.
Worn hydraulic motor or drive pump - Inspect and replace as necessary.
Hydraulic oil cooler is plugged - Cooling fins need to be cleaned.
Transmission overloading - Reduce the load.

Drive system makes excessive noise
Oil viscosity is incorrect - Use oil of proper viscosity.
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.
Hydraulic motor or drive pump is defective - Repair or replace faulty component.
Mechanical components of drive system are defective or worn - Check the parts for worn or defect and replace if required.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system has overheating
Hydraulic pressure incorrectly adjusted - Set pressure correctly.
Defective or misadjusted main relief valve - Adjust the valve or replace if necessary.
Hydraulic oil is dirty - Change hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic fluid level is low - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic pump is defective - Change or repair hydraulic pump if required.

Boom won't lower or raise
Faulty lift controls - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Defective hydraulic pump - Install new pump or repair it.
Hydraulic control valve is faulty - Change or repair hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is broken - Install a new boom cylinder or repair it.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.

Bucket does not tilt
Damaged bucket controls - Change or repair.
Damaged hydraulic oil pump - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Defective hydraulic control valve - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Bucket cylinder is faulty - Replace or repair cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.

Bucket or lift arm moves slowly
Faulty hydraulic oil pump - Check the pump capacity and replace pump if required.
Hydraulic cylinder leaking - Cylinder seals need to be replaced.
Hydraulic oil level low - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve is unadjusted or worn - Adjust correctly or repair.
Hydraulic pressure is low - Set pressure correctly.

Lift arm or bucket jerks when working
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Need to bleed air.
Hydraulic oil filter element is clogged - Service or change the hydraulic filter.
Dirty hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed.
Cylinder rod or tube is scratched - Change defective component.

Excessive hydraulic pump noise
Hydraulic leaks or low oil level - Refill hydraulic oil or repair leaks in system.
Clogged hydraulic filter - Change or clean oil filter.
Dirty suction line - Clean suction line as required.
Air in hydraulic pump - Need to bleed air.
Pump parts are worn out - Rebuild or install new pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery is not charging
Wiring connections are loose or corroded - Tighten or service cable connections.
Battery terminal clamps are defective - Terminal clamps need to be replaced.
Battery is defective - Replace the battery.
Damaged or loose belt - Belt needs to be adjusted or changed.

Starter cranks slowly
Low battery voltage - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Battery does not hold charge - Service or replace the battery.
Wires are disconnected or battery terminals are corroded - Check cable connections and replace or service terminals.

Starter motor won't turn
Battery is drained or worn - Battery needs to be recharged or replaced.
Battery cables are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check cables and connect as needed.
Battery capacity is low - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Starter motor failure - Replace or repair starter.
