Case 1816C Troubleshooting

The Case 1816C skid steer loader is powered by 43.3 cubic inches (0.7L) Onan B43M 4-cycle 2-cylinder air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 16 hp (11.9 kW) at 3600 rpm. The Case 1816C is equipped with a single-speed hydrostatic transmission, radial-lift loader boom, 60H drive chain, and 5.90x15 (Std) or 27x8.50x15 (Opt) tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 8 gpm (30.3 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 1200 psi (82.8 bar). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 500 lbs (227 kg) and tipping load of 1035 lbs (470 kg). The boom breakout force is 1050 lbs (475 kg), and bucket breakout force is 830 lbs (377 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts hard or will not start
No fuel in fuel tank - Add fuel.
Wrong fuel grade - Use quality gasoline.
Fuel system clogged - Repair or replace.
Spark plug wire is disconnected or loose - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Spark plug is damaged - Change spark plug.
Clogged fuel filter - Change fuel filter.
Safety contact for brake pedal defective - Install new part.
Carburetor malfunction - Check and repair as required.
Low compression - Check and replace worn parts.
Throttle cable is worn or adjusted improperly - Replace cable or adjust properly.

Engine runs roughly
Plugged cooling fins - Wash or clean as required.
Ignition failure - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Faulty or stuck choke cable - Replace or clean the cable.
Air filter is blocked - Replace or clean air filter.
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Check fuel pump and replace if necessary.

Engine starts but immediately shuts off
Faulty spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Carburetor is faulty or clogged - Replace or service carburetor.
Defective ignition coil - Replace ignition coil as necessary.
Damaged or weak valve springs - Install new valve springs.
Valves sticking - Clean the valves.

Engine overheated
Engine oil insufficient - Fill up the engine oil.
Excessive engine load - Load reducing required.
Air intake grill is clogged - Wash or clean as required.
Carburetor is running lean - Adjust carburetor properly.
Improper ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
Valve setting is incorrect - Valves needs to be adjusted properly.

Abnormal engine noise or knocking
Stale gasoline - Change fuel.
Engine is running overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.
Low engine oil level - Fill up the oil to required level.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel pump is clogged or faulty - Service or change fuel pump.
Worn crankshaft or main bearings - Worn parts replacement required.
Improper valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Cylinder bore or piston rings are worn - Replace faulty components.

Loss of engine power
Carburetor is improperly adjusted or dirty - Adjust the carburetor properly or clean it.
Air filter element is plugged - Replace or service air filter.
Fuel pump is defective or dirty - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Ignition system problems - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Damaged cylinder-head gasket - Install new head gasket.
Valves are stuck or burned - Replace or service valves.
Bent or worn push rod - Replace push rod.
Cylinder block parts are damaged - Defective parts need to be replaced.
Clogged oil filter (if equipped) - Service or change oil filter.

Engine uses too much fuel
Choke is not fully open - Check choke cable and adjust it.
Carburetor main jet is incorrectly adjusted - Adjust it correctly.
Spark plug is loose or defective - Spark plug need to be replaced or tightened.
Stuck, worn, or burned valves - Replace or clean valves.
Worn rings, piston, or sleeve - Replace faulty parts.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance.

Engine consuming too much oil
Worn gaskets or seals - Change worn parts according to specifications.
Worn valve guides and valve stems - Valves need to be changed.
Piston rings are stuck or worn - Have piston rings replaced.
Worn cylinder liner or piston - Check piston and liner, replace as required.
Breather pipe or hose is blocked - Replace or service.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Machine is not moving forward or backward
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Drive chain is worn - Check drive chain and change defective components.
Faulty relief valve - Repair or install a new relief valve.
Hydraulic filter or suction line is dirty - Replace hydraulic filter or clean suction line.
Foot or hand controls are damaged - Change or repair.
Worn drive motor or pump - Inspect and change as required.

Power is too low
Hydraulic oil filter is clogged - Change or service hydraulic filter.
Opened or defective relief valve - Close or replace relief valve.
Faulty or worn transmission components - Inspect and change defective parts.
Input drive shaft is worn - Change or repair faulty drive shaft.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed air from hydraulic system.

Drive system overheats
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid.
Plugged hydraulic fluid filter - Check, clean, or replace as required.
Worn or defective relief valve - Change or repair relief valve.
Defective drive pump or hydraulic motor - Inspect and replace as necessary.
Dirty oil cooler - Clean cooling fins as required.
Drive system is overloaded - Reduce the load.

Drive system makes excessive noise
Improper oil viscosity - Use the specified type of oil.
Air in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Change or repair faulty component.
Mechanical parts of drive system are worn or damaged - Inspect drive system and replace faulty parts.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheating
Incorrect hydraulic pressure setting - Adjust pressure correctly.
Unadjusted or defective main relief valve - Adjust relief valve or change if required.
Contaminated hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Lack of hydraulic oil - Add oil to the hydraulic system.
Hydraulic pump is defective - Repair or change pump if required.

Lift arm fails to drop or lift
Defective lift controls - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump failure - Install new pump or repair it.
Hydraulic control valve is defective - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Damaged hydraulic cylinder - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.

Bucket can't tilt
Bucket tilt controls malfunction - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Install new pump or repair it.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Change or repair hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic bucket cylinder is broken - Repair or change cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.

Slow boom or bucket operation
Hydraulic pump is worn - Flow-rate pump and change pump if necessary.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Correct leakage by changing the seals.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Defective or not adjusted hydraulic control valve - Repair or set properly.
Hydraulic system loosing pressure - Set pressure correctly.

Lift arm or bucket jerks when working
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed air from system.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter element - Replace or clean the filter.
Dirty hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil.
Cylinder tube or rod scoring - Replace failed component.

Excessive hydraulic pump noise
Lack of oil or hydraulic leakage - Refill hydraulic oil or repair leaks in system.
Hydraulic filter is dirty - Clean or install new filter.
Suction line is clogged - Need to service the suction line.
Air in hydraulic pump - Need to bleed air.
Pump parts are faulty - Change or rebuild pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery does not charge
Corroded or loose electrical wire connections - Tighten or service cable connections.
Faulty battery terminal clamps - Terminal clamps need to be replaced.
Battery failing - Change the battery.
Belt is loose or defective - Belt needs to be adjusted or changed.

Starter cranks slow
Low battery voltage - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery does not hold charge - Service charging system or install new battery.
Disconnected cables or faulty battery terminals - Check cables and clean or change terminals.

Starter motor won't turn
Battery is low or faulty - Change or recharge battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check cables and connect as needed.
Battery voltage is low - Charge the battery.
Starter motor is damaged - Repair or change starter.
