Bobcat S175 Troubleshooting

The Bobcat S175 skid steer loader is powered by Kubota V2203-M-DI diesel engine with a rated power of 46 hp (34.3 kW) or Kubota V2403-M-DI diesel engine with a rated power of 49 hp (36 kW). The Bobcat S175 is equipped with 1-speed or 2-speed transmission, vertical-lift loader boom, 80 HSOC roller chains, and 10x16.5 or 31-12x16.5 tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 16.9 gpm (64 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 3350 psi (231 bar). The skid steer has a rated operating capacity of 1750 lbs (794 kg) and tipping load of 3900 lbs (1770 kg). The boom lifting force is 3600 lbs (1633 kg), and bucket breakout force is 3550 lbs (1614 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts hard or will not start
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Fuel filter element clogging - Install new filter element.
Burnt or clogged injection nozzle - Service or change injection nozzles.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Change pump or rebuild it.

Diesel starts and stalls immediately
Air cleaner is clogged - Clean or change.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace filter element.
Fuel injection pump is leaking - Repair any leaks.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Replace or rebuild injection pump.

Engine stalls while running
Engine is cold - Warm up the engine.
Fuel filter plugging - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Replace injection nozzles.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust the pump as required.

Engine stops while idling
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Correct the settings.
Defective fuel injection pump - Repair or install a new fuel pump.
Fuel injector fault - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Valve out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance.

Diesel power loss
Air filter is plugged - Replace or clean air filter element.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Fuel injection pressure is incorrect - Adjust to correct pressure.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Normalize low idle speed.
Dirty fuel hoses or lines - Service fuel hoses and lines.
Cylinder head gasket is blown - Install new cylinder head gasket.
Leaking or defective piston rings - Piston rings replacement required.

Engine is overheated
Low coolant level - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Engine oil insufficient - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Clogged radiator core or leaking radiator cap - Clean radiator or change cap.
Excessive wear of the fan belt - Belt change is required.
Engine is overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.

Oil pressure is low
Oil level is insufficient - Fill up the engine oil.
Dirty oil filter element - Replace or clean engine oil filter element.
Incorrect oil viscosity - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing has excessive oil clearance - Replace bearings.
Defective oil pump - Check and replace if necessary.

Engine knocking or noise
Engine oil level low - Fill up the engine oil.
Low coolant temperature - Warm up engine as required.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Set up as recommended.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Correct the settings.
Dirty or defective injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Connecting rod is defective or misaligned - Align or change connecting rod.
Pistons are scored or worn - Install new pistons.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Drive system won't operate in either direction
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Add fluid as required.
Faulty drive chain - Inspect drive chain and replace faulty components.
Input drive shaft is defective - Repair or replace drive shaft.
Worn or damaged relief valve - Repair or install a new relief valve.
Hydraulic filter or suction line is plugged - Check, clean, or replace if required.
Worn or defective hand or foot controls - Repair or change.
Drive motor or pump failure - Inspect and change as required.

Reduced power
Plugged hydraulic oil filter - Change or clean hydraulic filter.
Defective or open relief valve - Change or close relief valve.
Transmission components are faulty or damaged - Check and change faulty components.
Input drive shaft is stuck - Replace or service the drive shaft.
Air in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.

Drive system overheating
Low hydraulic oil level - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic fluid filter is dirty - Replace or clean hydraulic filter.
Stuck relief valve - Repair or replace relief valve.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Inspect and replace as necessary.
Hydraulic oil cooler is dirty - Clean the cooling fins.
Drive system overload - Reduce loading.

Drive system makes excessive noise
Oil viscosity is wrong - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Need to bleed air.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Inspect and replace as necessary.
Worn or defective mechanical components of drive system - Inspect the components for worn or defect and repair as required.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheating
Hydraulic pressure incorrectly adjusted - Adjust it correctly.
Misadjusted or defective main relief valve - Set up or change the relief valve.
Hydraulic oil contamination - The oil must be changed.
Not enough hydraulic fluid in the system - Need to add fluid.
Hydraulic pump is defective - Repair or change pump if required.

Lift arm cannot be raised or lowered
Faulty lift controls - Repair or replace.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Repair or replace pump if necessary.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Install a new valve or repair it.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Change or repair lift cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.

Bucket won't move
Defective bucket controls - Check and repair as required.

Hydraulic fluid level low - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.

Bucket or lift arm is working slowly
Worn hydraulic oil pump - Check pump capacity and change if necessary.
Hydraulic cylinder oil leakage - Replace cylinder piston seals.
Low hydraulic oil level - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve is unadjusted or worn - Adjust correctly or repair.
Hydraulic system loosing pressure - Correct adjustment is required.

Lift arm or bucket is jerky
There is air in the hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Dirty hydraulic oil filter element - Clean or install new filter.
Hydraulic oil is dirty - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Scored cylinder tube or rod - Change worn component.

Hydraulic pump is excessively noisy
Hydraulic system leaking or not enough oil - Correct hydraulic leaks or top up oil as needed.
Hydraulic filter is clogged - Clean or change the filter.
Suction line is clogged - Need to clean the suction line.
Air trapped in hydraulic pump - Remove air from hydraulics.
Worn pump parts - Rebuild or replace hydraulic pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery cannot be charged
Loose or corroded wire connections - Clean or tighten wiring connections.
Defective battery terminal clamps - Change terminal clamps.
Battery dead cell - Battery replacement required.
Belt is defective or loose - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter motor cranks slow
Low battery voltage - Battery needs to be recharged.
Battery discharges quickly - Service battery or replace it.
Bad terminals or disconnected battery cables - Check cable connections and change or clean terminals.

Starter motor won't turn
Battery is discharged or defective - Recharge or replace battery.
Wiring is improperly connected or disconnected - Check wiring and connect properly.
Low battery output - Battery is drained, charge it.
Starter motor failing - Starter should be changed.
