Caterpillar 914G Troubleshooting

The Caterpillar 914G compact wheel loader is powered by Caterpillar 3054T vertical 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 90 hp (67 kW) at 2200 rpm. The Cat 914G is equipped with a 2-range hydrostatic transmission, power steering system, hydraulic wet disc brakes, and 17.5x25 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 24 gpm (90 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 3550 psi (245 bar). The wheel loader has a rated operating capacity of 5840 lbs (2650 kg) and tipping load of 11680 lbs (5300 kg). The maximum lift height is 135.2" (3435 mm) to hinge pin, and bucket breakout force is 13135 lbs (5970 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine hard to start or doesn't start
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Clogged fuel filter - Install new filter element.
Clogged or defective injection nozzles - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump is faulty - Change pump or rebuild it.

Diesel starts and stops
Dirty air cleaner - Service or replace air cleaner.
Fuel filter element clogging - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Fuel injection pump is leaking - Repair any leaks.
Dirty or defective injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Fuel injection pump is broken - Repair or install a new fuel pump.

Engine stops unexpectedly during operation
Engine is not preheated - Warm up engine as required.
Fuel filter plugging - Replace the filter element.
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Improper fuel injection timing - Set it up as required.

Engine stops while idle
Too low idle RPM - Adjust as required.
Fuel injection pump damage - Replacement or repair required.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Adjust valve clearance.

Diesel engine is losing power
Clogged air filter - Clean or replace element.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Fuel injection pressure is incorrect - Adjust to correct pressure.
Incorrect valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel lines or hoses clogging - Clean fuel hoses and lines.
Cylinder-head gasket is leaking - Replace the gasket as required.
Worn or damaged piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine overheating
Lack of coolant in cooling system - Fill the cooling system and check components for leaks or other faults.
Engine oil level low - Check and refill engine oil.
Dirty radiator fins or defective radiator cap - Clean radiator or install new cap.
Fan belt slipping or worn - Belt change is required.
Diesel engine overloaded - Reduce load on the engine.

Oil pressure is low
Oil level is insufficient - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Oil filter is dirty - Change or clean engine oil filter element.
Oil grade or viscosity is incorrect - Drain crankcase and refill with correct oil.
Incorrect oil clearance in crankshaft bearing - Replace bearings.
Oil pump is defective - Remove and inspect oil pump.

Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise
Lack of engine oil - Fill up the oil to required level.
Engine not warmed up - Warm up to required temperature.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Test and adjust.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Connecting rod is worn or not aligned - Connecting rod needs to be replaced or aligned.
Pistons are worn or scored - Install new pistons.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting

HST transmission is making noise
Contaminated transmission fluid or low fluid level - Top up to proper level or change transmission fluid.
Speed control pedal linkage is bent or not adjusted - Adjust or replace linkage.
Stuck relief valve - Change the valve.
Excessive loading - Reduce transmission load.
Transmission parts are worm or defective - Check hydrostatic transmission components for defect or damage and change if necessary.

Power is insufficient
Transmission oil insufficient - Fill the transmission housing to proper oil level.
Defective relief valve - Replace relief valve.
Speed control linkage is worn or unadjusted - Repair or adjust linkage.

Transmission oil overheating
Transmission oil level is low - Fill the transmission housing to proper oil level.
Transmission fluid filter is clogged - Replace or service transmission fluid filter.
Damaged or clogged cooling components - Inspect all cooling components and replace or repair if necessary.
Excessive loading - Reduce loading.

Transmission fluid leaking
Damaged seals or gaskets - Install new seal or gaskets.
High internal transmission case pressure - Check transmission parts for damage or wear and replace if required.
Plugged transmission fluid return tube - Service or replace return tube.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system has overheating
Hydraulic pressure is not correct - Adjust pressure as required.
Main relief valve failure or improper setting - Adjust the valve or replace if necessary.
Contaminated hydraulic oil - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic fluid level is low - Need to add fluid.
Faulty hydraulic oil pump - Repair or replace pump if necessary.

Boom can't lift or drop
Damaged lift controls - Change or repair.
Defective hydraulic pump - Repair or install new hydraulic pump.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Repair or replace the valve.
Damaged hydraulic cylinder - Install a new boom cylinder or repair it.
Hydraulic oil level low - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.

Bucket does not function
Bucket controls failure - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Hydraulic pump malfunction - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve malfunction - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.
Damaged bucket cylinder - Install a new cylinder or repair it.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.

Slow bucket or lift arm action
Hydraulic pump is worn - Flow-rate pump and change pump if necessary.
Hydraulic cylinder leaking - Repair leak by replacing the seals.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic control valve is faulty or out of adjustment - Set correctly or repair.
Hydraulic pressure has dropped - Adjust pressure as required.

Lift arm or bucket is working jerkily
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.
Hydraulic oil filter element clogging - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic oil contamination - Hydraulic oil change required.
Scratched cylinder rod or tube - Replace failed component.

Hydraulic pump makes excessive noise
Insufficient oil level or leaking hydraulic system - Repair hydraulic leaks or add oil as required.
Hydraulic filter clogging - Clean or change the filter.
Suction line is dirty - Service the suction line.
Air in hydraulic pump - Bleed air from hydraulics.
Pump parts are damaged - Change or rebuild pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery is not charging
Electrical wire connections are loose or corroded - Tighten or service cable connections.
Faulty electrical terminal connectors - Replace terminal connectors.
Defective battery - Battery replacement required.
Worn or loose belt - Belt needs to be adjusted or replaced.

Starter turning slow
Low battery power - Charge the battery.
Battery is not holding charge - Service battery or replace it.
Faulty battery terminals or disconnected cables - Connect wiring correctly or install new terminals.

Starter is not working
Battery is drained or worn - Recharge or replace battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check cables and connect as needed.
Low battery capacity - Charge the battery.
Starter motor is faulty - Repair or change starter.
