Kubota R640 Troubleshooting
The
Kubota R640 wheel loader driveline system components: Kubota V2607-CR-TE5-WL
four-cylinder turbocharged liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of
61.2 hp (45.6 kW), and hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump
with a rated capacity of 17.8 gal/min (67.2 l/min). The system relief pressure
is 2975 psi (209 bar). The Kubota R640 is equipped with a hydrostatic power
steering, wet disc brakes, and 405/70R18 tires. The wheel loader has a maximum
lift height of 128.2" (3255 mm) and bucket breakout force of 8525 lbs (3875 kg).
The rated operating capacity is 3880 lbs (1760 kg), and tipping load is 7760 lbs
(3520 kg).

Engine starts hard or won't start
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Fuel filter plugged - Filter maintenance required.
Burnt or defective injection nozzle - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Valve out of adjustment - Adjustment procedure required.
Defective fuel injection pump - Repair or change injection pump.
Diesel starts but immediately shuts off
Air filter is clogged - Clean or change filter.
Fuel filter element clogging - Service or replace the filter.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Install a new fuel pump or repair.
Engine shuts off while running
Engine is not warmed up to required temperature - Warm up to required temperature.
Clogged fuel filter - Change filter element.
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Replace injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Adjust as recommended.
Engine stops at idle
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Defective fuel injection pump - Rebuild or replace pump.
Dirty or defective injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Valve out of adjustment - Have it adjusted.
Engine power is too low
Dirty air filter - Change or service air filter element.
Faulty fuel injection nozzles - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Uneven fuel injection pressure - Adjust pressure to proper level.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Normalize low idle speed.
Clogged fuel hoses or lines - Service fuel hoses and lines.
Cylinder head gasket defective - Replace cylinder head gasket.
Worn or damaged piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.
Engine is overheated
Low coolant level - Refill to the correct level and inspect system for leaks.
Engine oil level low - Need to add engine oil.
Dirty radiator core or defective radiator cap - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Fan belt is worn or faulty - Replace as required.
Diesel engine is overloaded - Reduce engine load.
Oil pressure is insufficient
Not enough oil in the engine - Check and refill the oil.
Clogged oil filter - Service or replace engine oil filter.
Oil grade or viscosity is wrong - Drain crankcase and refill with correct oil.
Excessive oil clearance of crankshaft bearing - Bearing replacement required.
Oil pump failure - Repair or replace.
Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise
Not enough engine oil - Fill up the engine oil.
Engine is not preheated - Warm up engine as required.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust according to specifications.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjust the low idle speed.
Dirty or defective injectors - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Connecting rod is worn or misaligned - Connecting rod needs to be replaced or aligned.
Pistons are worn or broken - Replace the pistons.

Hydrostatic transmission noises
Fluid is contaminated or fluid level is insufficient - Top up to proper level or change transmission fluid.
Speed control linkage is defective or unadjusted - Adjust or repair linkage.
Relief valve failure - Change the valve.
Excessive transmission load - Reduce the load is required.
Transmission components are damaged or worn - Change or repair defective parts.
Lack of power
Transmission oil level is low - Need to add transmission oil.
Defective relief valve - Replace relief valve as required.
Worn or out of adjustment speed control linkage - Adjust or change linkage.
Transmission oil overheating
Transmission oil insufficient - Fill up the transmission oil.
Transmission fluid filter element is clogged - Clean or change transmission fluid filter.
Damaged or clogged cooling components - Inspect all cooling components and service or replace if necessary.
Transmission is under excessive load - Reduce loading.
External fluid leaks
Broken seals or gaskets - Change defective seal or gaskets.
Transmission case internal pressure is too high - Replace worn components.
Plugged transmission fluid return tube - Service or replace return tube.

Hydraulic system overheated
Incorrect hydraulic pressure setting - Set pressure correctly.
Faulty or improperly adjusted main relief valve - Adjust the valve or replace if necessary.
Contaminated hydraulic oil - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic fluid level is low - Add fluid to the hydraulic system.
Hydraulic pump is worn - Change or repair hydraulic pump if required.
Lift arm cannot be raised or lowered
Lift controls are faulty - Check and repair as required.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Install a new valve or repair it.
Hydraulic cylinder is broken - Repair or install a new lift cylinder.
Hydraulic oil level low - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Bucket tilt does not work
Defective bucket controls - Repair or replace.
Hydraulic pump failure - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Replace or repair the valve.
Broken bucket cylinder - Replace or repair cylinder.
Low hydraulic oil level - Need to add oil.
Slow bucket or lift arm operation
Hydraulic pump is worn - Test the pump flow rate and install new pump if required.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Replace cylinder piston seals.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Defective or not adjusted hydraulic control valve - Set correctly or repair.
Hydraulic system loosing pressure - Adjust pressure correctly.
Bucket or boom jerks when working
Air in hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Hydraulic oil filter element is dirty - Service or change the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic oil contamination - The oil must be changed.
Cylinder tube or rod is scored - Change worn component.
Hydraulic pump is excessively noisy
Hydraulic system leaking or not enough oil - Remedy hydraulic leakage or refill oil as necessary.
Hydraulic filter is clogged - Change or clean oil filter.
Suction line clogging - Need to service the suction line.
Air in hydraulic pump - Need to bleed air.
Worn pump components - Rebuild or replace hydraulic pump.
Electrical Troubleshooting |
Battery is not charging
Corroded or loose electrical wire connections - Tighten or clean connections.
Battery terminal clamps are defective - Terminal clamps should be changed.
Battery is defective - Use a new battery.
Loose or worn belt - Replace belt or adjust belt tension.
Starter turns slow
Battery capacity is low - Charge the battery.
Battery won’t hold charge - Service battery or change it.
Battery terminals are corroded or wires are disconnected - Check cable connections and replace or service terminals.
Starter motor is not working
Battery is discharged or worn - Replace or charge as required.
Wiring harness is disconnected or improperly connected - Check wiring harness and connect as required.
Battery voltage is low - Battery needs to be recharged.
Starter motor failure - Starter should be changed.
