John Deere 324L Troubleshooting

The John Deere 324L wheel loader driveline system components: Yanmar 4TNV98CT 4-cylinder direct injection turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 71 hp (52.6 kW), and hydrostatic transmission. The hydraulic system has a gear pump with a rated capacity of 24.5 gal/min (93 l/min) or 34.8 gal/min (132 l/min). The John Deere 324L is equipped with a power steering system, hydraulic wet disc brakes, and 405/70R20 or 405/70R18 tires. The wheel loader has a maximum lift height to hinge pin of 131.9" (3350 mm) and breakout force of 11420 lbs (5180 kg). The rated operating capacity is 4760 (2160 kg), and tipping load is 9520 lbs (4320 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine hard to start or won't start
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace filter element.
Damaged or dirty injection nozzles - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Repair or replace injection pump.

Diesel starts but immediately shuts off
Air filter is clogged - Service or replace the air filter.
Dirty fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Fuel injection pump is leaking - Repair any leaks.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump damage - Replace or repair injection pump.

Engine stalls while running
Coolant temperature is low - Warm up engine as required.
Clogged fuel filter - Install new filter element.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Replace injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.

Engine stalls while idling
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Test and adjust.
Defective fuel injection pump - Repair or install new pump.
Dirty or defective injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance.

Loss of engine power
Clogged air filter - Replace or clean air filter element.
Damaged or dirty injection nozzles - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Test fuel injection pressure and adjust it correctly.
Valve clearance is wrong - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Adjust as required.
Dirty fuel hoses or lines - Fuel hoses and lines must be clean.
Blown cylinder head gasket - Cylinder-head gasket replacement required.
Defective or worn piston rings - Change piston rings.

Engine overheated
Insufficient coolant - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Insufficient engine oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Dirty radiator core or defective radiator cap - Clean radiator or install new cap.
Fan belt is worn or faulty - Change the fan belt.
Engine is overloaded - Reduce engine load.

Oil pressure is insufficient
Insufficient engine oil - Check and refill the oil.
Dirty oil filter - Replace or clean engine oil filter element.
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of proper viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing has incorrect oil clearance - Install new bearings.
Oil pump malfunction - Repair or change.

Engine noise or knocking
Engine oil level low - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Engine is not preheated - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust the pump as required.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is worn or not aligned - Align or change connecting rod.
Pistons are broken or worn - Install new pistons.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting

Hydrostatic transmission is excessively noisy
Contaminated transmission fluid or low fluid level - Fill to required level or change the fluid.
Worn or out of adjustment speed control linkage - Adjust or repair linkage.
Relief valve malfunction - Install a new valve.
Transmission is under excessive load - Reduce the load is required.
Defective or worn transmission parts - Check internal transmission parts for damage or wear and replace if required.

Loss of power
Transmission fluid level is low - Check and refill the transmission fluid.
Stuck relief valve - Change the valve.
Speed control linkage is worn or unadjusted - Repair or adjust linkage.

Transmission fluid over heats
Lack of transmission fluid - Need to add transmission fluid.
Transmission fluid filter element is clogged - Replace or service transmission fluid filter.
Cooling components are defective or plugged - Inspect all cooling components and service or change if necessary.
Transmission overloaded - Reduce the load is required.

Transmission oil leaks
Damaged seals or gaskets - Install new components.
High internal transmission case pressure - Replace worn components.
Clogged transmission fluid return tube - Clean or replace return tube.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system has overheating
Hydraulic pressure incorrectly adjusted - Set pressure correctly.
Main relief valve is faulty or misadjusted - Set up or change the relief valve.
Hydraulic oil contamination - Change hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic fluid level is insufficient - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Change or repair hydraulic pump if required.

Boom cannot be lowered or raised
Lift controls are faulty - Replace or repair.
Defective hydraulic pump - Repair or replace pump if necessary.
Defective hydraulic control valve - Repair or change the valve.
Hydraulic cylinder not working - Change or repair lift cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.

Bucket won't move
Bucket tilt controls are damaged - Change or repair.
Hydraulic pump malfunction - Repair or change pump if required.
Hydraulic control valve failure - Change or repair hydraulic valve.
Broken bucket cylinder - Change or repair cylinder.
Hydraulic oil level low - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.

Slow boom or bucket action
Worn hydraulic oil pump - Check pump flow and change pump if necessary.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Cylinder seals need to be replaced.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic control valve is defective or set improper - Set correctly or repair.
Hydraulic system loosing pressure - Adjust pressure correctly.

Bucket or boom is jerky
Air in the hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.
Hydraulic oil filter element is clogged - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic fluid is dirty - Fill up with fresh hydraulic fluid.
Cylinder tube or rod is scored - Replace defective component.

Excessive hydraulic pump noise
Lack of oil or hydraulic leakage - Correct hydraulic leaks or top up oil as needed.
Hydraulic filter clogging - Service or replace hydraulic filter.
Suction line is clogged - Suction line needs to be cleaned.
Air trapped in hydraulic pump - Remove air from hydraulics.
Worn pump components - Replace or rebuild the pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery will not charge
Corroded or loose electrical wire connections - Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections.
Battery terminal connectors are faulty - Terminal connectors need to be changed.
Worn-out battery - Use a new battery.
Belt is loose or defective - Change belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter motor cranks slow
Low battery voltage - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Battery will not hold charge - Battery needs to be serviced or replaced.
Battery terminals are corroded or wires are disconnected - Check wiring connections and replace or clean terminals.

Starter will not crank
Battery is drained or worn - Replace or charge as required.
Disconnected or incorrectly connected wires - Inspect battery wires and connect correctly.
Low battery output voltage - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Damaged starter motor - Replace or repair starter.
