John Deere 244L Troubleshooting

The John Deere 244L compact wheel loader is powered by 202.5 cu.in (3.6L) Yanmar 4TNV98CT 4-cylinder turbocharged intercooled diesel engine with a rated power of 71 hp (52.6 kW) at 2500 rpm. The John Deere 244L is equipped with a 2-range hydrostatic transmission, power steering system, hydraulic wet disc brakes, and 365/70R18 standard tires. The open center hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 18.5 gpm (70 lpm). The wheel loader has a rated operating capacity of 3945 lbs (1790 kg) and tipping load of 7890 lbs (3580 kg). Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts hard or won't start
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel filter element clogging - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Clogged or burnt injection nozzle - Service or change injection nozzles.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
Excessive valve clearance - Check and adjust as required.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Install a new fuel pump or repair.

Engine starts and stops suddenly
Dirty air filter - Clean or change filter.
Fuel filter element clogging - Replace the filter element.
Poor fuel injection pump tightness - Look for any leaks of fuel pump, tighten it fast.
Defective or clogged fuel injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump is faulty - Replace injection pump or repair it.

Engine shuts off while running
Engine is not fully warmed up - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Air in the fuel lines - Bleed the fuel lines.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust the pump as required.

Engine shuts off while idling
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Correct low idle settings.
Fuel injection pump is faulty - Install a new fuel pump or repair.
Fuel injectors are faulty or clogged - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Incorrect valve clearance - Have it adjusted.

Diesel power loss
Air cleaner is dirty - Clean or change.
Defective or clogged injection nozzle - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Adjust pressure to proper level.
Valve out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Adjust as required.
Fuel hoses or lines are dirty - Fuel lines and hoses need to be cleaned.
Worn cylinder head gasket - Replace cylinder head gasket.
Piston rings are worn or damaged - Change piston rings.

Engine overheating
Low coolant level - Refill to the correct level and inspect system for leaks.
Engine oil level is low - Need to add engine oil.
Clogged radiator core or damaged radiator cap - Clean radiator or change cap.
Loose or defective fan belt - Change as required.
Engine overloaded - Load reducing required.

Low oil pressure
Engine oil insufficient - Fill crankcase to proper oil level.
Oil filter is dirty - Service or change engine oil filter element.
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing has incorrect oil clearance - Bearing needs to be changed.
Oil pump is damaged - Repair or change.

Engine knocks or noises
Engine oil level low - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up the engine.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Set up as recommended.
Incorrect low idle setting - Correct the settings.
Fuel injector fault - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Misaligned or defective connecting rod - Connecting rod needs to be replaced or aligned.
Worn or scored pistons - Pistons need to be replaced.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting

Hydrostatic transmission is excessively noisy
Insufficient oil level or contaminated oil - Add oil to proper level or pour fresh transmission oil.
Worn or out of adjustment speed control linkage - Adjust or change linkage.
Relief valve is stuck - Replace relief valve as required.
Excessive transmission load - Reduce transmission load.
Worn or defective transmission components - After disassembling and inspection, change defective components.

Lack of power
Transmission oil insufficient - Fill the transmission housing to proper oil level.
Relief valve malfunction - Change the valve.
Worn or unadjusted speed control linkage - Adjust or repair linkage.

Transmission oil over heats
Low fluid level - Add fluid to the transmission housing.
Dirty transmission fluid filter - Service or change transmission fluid filter.
Plugged or defective cooling components - Inspect all cooling components and replace or clean if necessary.
Transmission overload - Reduce transmission load.

Transmission oil leaks
Damaged seals or gaskets - Install new gaskets or seal.
Internal transmission housing pressure is too high - Change defective components.
Clogged oil drain line - Clean or replace drain line.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheating
Hydraulic pressure incorrectly adjusted - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.
Unadjusted or defective main relief valve - Adjust the valve or replace if necessary.
Hydraulic oil is dirty - The oil must be changed.
Not enough hydraulic fluid in the system - Fill the hydraulic system with oil.
Defective hydraulic pump - Change or repair hydraulic pump if required.

Boom cannot be lowered or raised
Damaged lift controls - Replace or repair.
Damaged hydraulic oil pump - Repair or change pump if required.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Replace or repair the valve.
Hydraulic cylinder not working - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Add fluid as required.

Bucket can't tilt
Bucket tilt controls are defective - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Defective hydraulic pump - Repair or install new hydraulic pump.
Hydraulic control valve is defective - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.
Defective bucket cylinder - Repair or replace cylinder.
Low hydraulic oil level - Need to add oil.

Bucket or lift arm runs slowly
Hydraulic pump is defective - Test pump performance and replace pump if necessary.
Hydraulic cylinder leaking - Replace cylinder piston seals.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Hydraulic control valve is not set properly or defective - Repair or set correctly.
Hydraulic system loosing pressure - Correct adjustment is required.

Lift arm or bucket is moving jerkily
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Dirty hydraulic oil filter - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic fluid is contaminated - Change hydraulic fluid.
Scratched cylinder rod or tube - Replace damaged component.

Hydraulic pump is excessively noisy
Not enough oil or hydraulic system leaking - Remedy hydraulic leakage or refill oil as necessary.
Hydraulic filter clogging - Clean or install new filter.
Plugged suction line - Clean suction line as required.
Air enters the pump - Air bleeding is required.
Pump parts are worn out - Rebuild or change hydraulic pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery will not charge
Loose or corroded wire connections - Clean or tighten connections.
Faulty electrical terminal connectors - Change terminal connectors.
Battery failing - Install a new battery.
Belt is loose or defective - Replace belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter turns slow
Low battery voltage - Battery needs to be recharged.
Battery drains quickly - Service or replace the battery.
Disconnected wires or corroded battery terminals - Check wire connections and change or service terminals.

Starter will not work
Battery is drained or defective - Charge or change the battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect cables and connect properly.
Low battery output voltage - Battery needs to be recharged.
Defective starter motor - Starter needs to be changed.
