JCB 417 HT Troubleshooting

The JCB 417 HT wheel loader driveline system components: 269 cu.in (4.4L) JCB EcoMAX T4F 4-cylinder direct injection turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 125 hp (93 kW), and 4x3 powershift transmission. The hydraulic system has a pump with a rated capacity of 41.2 gal/min (156 l/min). The system relief pressure is 3480 psi (240 bar). The JCB 417 HT is equipped with a hydraulic power steering, hydraulic wet disc brakes, and 17.5R25 tires. The wheel loader has a maximum lift height to hinge pin of 140.4" (3565 mm) and breakout force of 13440 lbs (6110 kg). The rated operating capacity is 7525 lbs (3420 kg), and tipping load is 15050 lbs (6840 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or won't start
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Filter maintenance required.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged or dirty - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Valve out of adjustment - Adjustment procedure required.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Repair or change injection pump.

Diesel starts and suddenly stops
Plugged air cleaner - Service or replace air cleaner.
Fuel filter plugging - Replace filter element.
Fuel injection pump is leaking - Repair any leaks.
Defective or clogged fuel injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Change or repair the pump.

Engine stalls while running
Engine is not preheated - Warm up the engine.
Fuel filter element clogging - Change filter element.
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Clogged injection nozzle - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust the pump as required.

Engine stalls when idling
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Adjust as required.
Fuel injection pump failure - Replace injection pump or repair it.
Defective fuel injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Have it adjusted.

Engine loses power
Air filter is clogged - Change or service air filter element.
Faulty or dirty injection nozzles - Replace injection nozzles.
Uneven fuel injection pressure - Adjust pressure to proper level.
Improper valve clearance - Correct valve clearance.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjustment required.
Restricted fuel lines or hoses - Clean fuel system lines and hoses.
Cylinder-head gasket is broken - Change cylinder head gasket.
Piston rings are worn or defective - Replace the piston rings as required.

Engine overheating
Engine coolant is insufficient - Top up coolant fluid and check system for leaks.
Lack of engine oil - Fill up the engine oil.
Defective radiator cap or clogged radiator core - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Fan belt is worn or faulty - The fan belt needs to be replaced.
Diesel engine overloaded - Reduce engine load.

Oil pressure too low
Low oil level - Need to add oil.
Engine oil filter is plugged - Replace or clean engine oil filter element.
Improper type of engine oil - Use proper viscosity oil.
Crankshaft bearing has excessive oil clearance - Bearing needs to be changed.
Oil pump is defective - Inspect and change as required.

Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise
Not enough engine oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up the engine.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust the pump as required.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Correct low idle adjustment.
Dirty or defective injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Connecting rod is misaligned or defective - Need to align or replace the connecting rod.
Scored or worn pistons - Pistons need to be replaced.

Transmission Troubleshooting

Low transmission fluid pressure
Insufficient transmission fluid - Checking transmission fluid level and add if necessary.
Plugged transmission oil filter (if equipped) - Clean or change transmission oil filter.
Relief valve malfunction - Replace relief valve.

Transmission makes noise
Insufficient transmission oil - Fill the transmission housing with oil.
Transmission fluid is dirty - Change the fluid.
Gears are damaged or backlash is incorrect - Adjust backlash correctly or replace the gears.
Bearings are broken or worn - Install new bearings.
Damaged or worn gear shift forks - Shift forks need to be changed.
Damaged or worn shaft splines - Shaft need to be replaced.

Hard shifting
Worn or rusty gear shift linkage - Shift linkage need to be replaced.
Worn or bent gear shift forks - Replace defective shift forks.
Worn parts of the gear shifting mechanism - Change worn parts.
Unadjusted or worn clutch - Clutch adjustment or replacement required.

Transmission fluid leaking
Too much oil in transmission - Drain the excess oil.
Seals or gaskets are broken - Seals and gaskets need to be replaced.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system is overheated
Hydraulic pressure is not adjusted correctly - Adjust pressure as required.
Main relief valve improper adjustment or failure - Adjust the valve or replace if necessary.
Dirty hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic fluid level is insufficient - Add fluid to the hydraulic system.
Faulty hydraulic oil pump - Repair or replace pump if necessary.

Lift arm does not lower or raise
Faulty lift controls - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump not working - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve failure - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.
Defective hydraulic cylinder - Change or repair lift cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.

Bucket can't tilt
Bucket tilt controls are damaged - Change or repair.
Defective hydraulic pump - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve is defective - Install a new valve or repair it.
Bucket cylinder failure - Repair or replace cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.

Boom or bucket runs slowly
Hydraulic pump is worn - Check hydraulic pump flow and replace pump if necessary.
Oil leaks from hydraulic cylinder - Change cylinder piston seals.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Faulty or incorrect setting hydraulic control valve - Set properly or repair.
Hydraulic pressure has dropped - Adjust pressure correctly.

Jerky operation of the bucket or boom
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Plugged hydraulic oil filter - Clean or install new filter.
Contaminated hydraulic fluid - Hydraulic fluid change required.
Cylinder tube or rod is scored - Replace failed component.

Hydraulic pump makes excessive noise
Not enough oil or hydraulic system leaking - Repair hydraulic leaks or add oil as required.
Hydraulic filter is dirty - Change or clean oil filter.
Suction line is clogged - Need to service the suction line.
Pump sucks air - Bleed air from hydraulics.
Pump parts are faulty - Replace or rebuild the pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery is not charging
Loose or corroded cable connections - Tighten or service connections.
Defective battery terminal connectors - Install new terminal connectors.
Battery is defective - Battery change required.
Belt is defective or loose - Adjust belt tension or install a new belt.

Starter turning slow
Battery voltage is low - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery does not hold charge - Service charging system or change battery.
Terminals are faulty or battery cables are disconnected - Connect wiring correctly or install new terminals.

Starter motor is not working
Battery is discharged or defective - Replace or charge as required.
Wire harness is disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wire harness and connect as required.
Battery voltage is low - Charge the battery.
Defective starter motor - Replace or repair starter.
