JCB 414S Troubleshooting
The
JCB 414S wheel loader is powered by 409 cu.in (6.7L) Cummins QSB6.7 6-cylinder
direct injection turbocharged liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of
160 hp (119 kW) at 2200 rpm. The JCB 414S is equipped with a 6x3 powershift
transmission, power steering system, hydraulic wet disc brakes, and 500/70R24
standard tires. The hydraulic system has twin pumps with fluid flow rate of 23.7
gpm (90 lpm) and 19.9 gpm (64 lpm). The wheel loader has a rated operating
capacity of 5260 lbs (2625 kg) and tipping load of 11570 lbs (5250 kg). The max
lift height is 144.9 inches (3680 mm) to hinge pin, and breakout force is 12090
lbs (5485 kg).

Engine hard to start or won't start
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Clogged fuel filter - Clean or change the filter.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Service or change injection nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.
Fuel injection pump is not operating properly - Replace injection pump or repair it.
Diesel starts and stops
Air cleaner is dirty - Clean or replace air cleaner element.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Change filter element.
Fuel injection pump is leaking - Repair any leaks.
Defective or clogged fuel injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Defective fuel injection pump - Change or repair the pump.
Engine stalls during operation
Engine not warmed up - Warm up to required temperature.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Change the filter element.
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Replace injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Adjust according to specifications.
Engine stops at idle
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Adjust the low idle speed.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Repair or change injection pump.
Clogged or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Incorrect valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Engine power loss
Dirty air cleaner - Clean or change cleaner.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Uneven fuel injection pressure - Adjust to correct pressure.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Adjustment procedure required.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Adjust as required.
Dirt in the fuel hoses or lines - Clean fuel system hoses and lines.
Leaking cylinder head gasket - Cylinder-head gasket replacement required.
Piston rings are damaged or leaking - Replace the piston rings as required.
Engine is overheated
Lack of coolant in cooling system - Fill the cooling system and check components for leaks or other faults.
Not enough engine oil - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Radiator fins are clogged or radiator cap is faulty - Change cap or clean radiator.
Fan belt is worn or faulty - Change the fan belt.
Diesel engine is overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.
Oil pressure too low
Not enough oil in the engine - Fill the crankcase with oil.
Plugged engine oil filter - Change or clean engine oil filter element.
Oil grade or viscosity is incorrect - Use the specified type of engine oil.
Crankshaft bearing oil clearance is incorrect - Replace bearings.
Oil pump failure - Replace as required.
Abnormal engine knocking or noise
Engine oil insufficient - Check and refill engine oil.
Engine not warmed up - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Improper fuel injection timing - Use the correct fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Correct the settings.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Misaligned or defective connecting rod - Replace or align connecting rod.
Pistons are worn or broken - Pistons replacement required.
Transmission Troubleshooting |
Low transmission fluid pressure
Insufficient transmission oil - Need to add transmission oil.
Plugged transmission oil filter (if equipped) - Clean or change transmission oil filter.
Stuck relief valve - Install a new relief valve.
Transmission is making noise
Insufficient transmission fluid - Check and refill the transmission fluid.
Transmission fluid contamination - Transmission fluid change required.
Backlash is incorrect or gears are damaged - Change the gears or set backlash properly.
Bearings are broken or worn - Install new bearings.
Worn or bent gear shift forks - Shift forks need to be replaced.
Shaft splines are worn or damaged - Replace the shaft.
Gears are hard to shift
Gear shift linkage is worn or rusty - Install a new gear shift linkage.
Damaged or worn gear shift forks - Change defective shift forks.
Worn parts of the gear shifting mechanism - Change worn parts.
Clutch is out of adjustment or defective - Adjust or change the clutch.
External oil leaks
Too much fluid in transmission - Excess fluid must be drained.
Damaged gaskets or seals - Gaskets or seal need to be replaced.

Hydraulic system overheated
Incorrect hydraulic pressure setting - Set pressure correctly.
Main relief valve malfunction or improper adjustment - Adjust or replace the relief valve.
Dirty hydraulic oil - Hydraulic oil change required.
Hydraulic oil level is insufficient - Fill the hydraulic system with oil.
Hydraulic pump is worn - Repair or install new hydraulic pump.
Boom does not raise or lower
Defective lift controls - Inspect and repair if necessary.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Install new pump or repair it.
Hydraulic control valve is defective - Change or repair hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Replace or repair boom cylinder.
Hydraulic oil is insufficient - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.
Bucket can't tilt
Bucket tilt controls are damaged - Replace or repair.
Hydraulic pump malfunction - Install new pump or repair it.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Install a new valve or repair it.
Defective bucket cylinder - Replace or repair cylinder.
Low hydraulic oil level - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Slow boom or bucket operation
Hydraulic pump is defective - Test pump flow rate and replace pump if required.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Repair leak by replacing the seals.
Low hydraulic oil level - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Faulty or incorrect setting hydraulic control valve - Repair or adjust correctly.
Hydraulic pressure has dropped - Adjust it correctly.
Jerky operation of the bucket or boom
There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.
Hydraulic oil filter element clogging - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - Hydraulic fluid change required.
Cylinder rod or tube is scuffed - Replace worn component.
Hydraulic pump makes excessive noise
Hydraulic leakage or lack of oil - Refill hydraulic oil or repair leaks in system.
Dirty hydraulic filter - Replace or clean the filter.
Clogged suction line - Suction line must be serviced.
Air in hydraulic pump - Need to bleed air.
Pump parts are faulty - Rebuild or replace hydraulic pump.
Electrical Troubleshooting |
Battery won’t charge
Loose or corroded wire connections - Service or tighten cable connections.
Defective battery terminal connectors - Change terminal connectors.
Battery faulty cell - Replace the battery.
Belt is damaged or loose - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.
Starter turns slowly
Battery voltage is low - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Battery is draining quickly - Service charging system or replace battery.
Disconnected battery cables or bad terminals - Check battery wires and service or replace terminals.
Starter will not crank
Battery is discharged or defective - Charge or replace the battery.
Disconnected or improperly connected wiring harness - Inspect battery wiring harness and connect as required.
Low battery capacity - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Starter motor failure - Starter should be changed.
