Caterpillar 930M Troubleshooting

The Cat 930M wheel loader is powered by Caterpillar C7.1 ACERT 6-cylinder turbocharged aftercooled diesel engine with a rated power of 157 hp (117 kW) at 1800 rpm. The Caterpillar 930M is equipped with a four-range hydrostatic transmission, power steering system, hydraulic wet disc brakes, and 20.5R25 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 50 gpm (190 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 3625 psi (250 bar). The wheel loader has a rated operating capacity of 9340 lbs (4235 kg) and tipping load of 18680 lbs (8470 kg). The maximum lift height is 153.7" (3905 mm) to hinge pin, and bucket breakout force is 27265 lbs (12370 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Diesel engine hard to start or doesn't start
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Clean or change the filter.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Service or change injection nozzles.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.
Fuel injection pump is not operating properly - Repair or install new pump.

Engine starts but stalls suddenly
Air filter is plugged - Clean or change filter.
Clogged fuel filter - Change filter element.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Fuel injectors are faulty or clogged - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Defective fuel injection pump - Repair or replace injection pump.

Engine shuts off suddenly while running
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up engine as required.
Fuel filter element clogging - Install new filter element.
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Defective or clogged injection nozzle - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.

Engine stops when idling
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Replace or repair injection pump.
Defective fuel injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.

Engine loses power
Dirty air cleaner - Install new air cleaner element.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Service or change injection nozzles.
Incorrect fuel injection pressure - Adjust to proper pressure.
Improper valve clearance - Have it adjusted.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjustment required.
Dirt in the fuel hoses or lines - Service fuel lines and hoses.
Cylinder-head gasket is leaking - Replace the gasket as required.
Damaged or leaking piston rings - Change piston rings.

Engine overheats
Not enough coolant - Fill radiator to proper level and check components for faults.
Low engine oil level - Fill up the engine oil.
Dirty radiator fins or faulty radiator cap - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Loose or damaged fan belt - Change as required.
Engine overloaded - Reduce engine load.

Oil pressure is insufficient
Engine oil level low - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Dirty oil filter - Clean or change engine oil filter.
Incorrect engine oil Use correct viscosity oil.
Crankshaft bearing has excessive oil clearance - Change bearings.
Defective oil pump - Repair or change.

Engine knocking or noise
Engine oil insufficient - Need to add engine oil.
Low coolant temperature - Warm up to required temperature.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Adjust as required.
Dirty or defective injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Misaligned or faulty connecting rod - Need to change or align the connecting rod.
Worn or scored pistons - Replace the pistons.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting

HST transmission noise
Insufficient oil level or contaminated oil - Fill to required level or change the transmission oil.
Speed control linkage is worn or unadjusted - Adjust or repair linkage.
Relief valve is stuck - Change relief valve.
Excessive loading - Reduce the load is required.
Worn or defective transmission components - Replace or repair defective components.

Power is insufficient
Insufficient transmission fluid - Checking transmission fluid level and add if necessary.
Relief valve malfunction - Replace the valve.
Speed control linkage is worn or unadjusted - Change or adjust linkage.

Transmission overheats
Low fluid level - Fill the transmission housing to proper fluid level.
Clogged transmission fluid filter - Replace or service transmission fluid filter.
Cooling components are plugged or defective - Inspect all cooling components and service or change if necessary.
Excessive loading - Reduce loading.

External oil leaks
Worn seals or gaskets - Gaskets or seal need to be replaced.
Internal transmission housing pressure is too high - Repair or replace damaged components.
Oil return tube is plugged - Clean or replace the tube.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheated
Hydraulic pressure is incorrect - Adjust pressure as required.
Main relief valve malfunction or improper adjustment - Adjust or change relief valve.
Hydraulic fluid contamination - Hydraulic fluid change required.
Lack of hydraulic oil - Check oil level and add hydraulic oil as required.
Faulty hydraulic oil pump - Replace or repair pump if necessary.

Lift arm won't raise or lower
Defective lift controls - Repair or change.
Defective hydraulic pump - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve is faulty - Replace or repair the valve.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Repair or install a new lift cylinder.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.

Bucket tilt does not work
Damaged bucket controls - Repair or replace.
Damaged hydraulic oil pump - Repair or replace pump if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve malfunction - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Bucket cylinder malfunction - Repair or change cylinder.
Hydraulic oil level low - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.

Boom or bucket moves slowly
Worn hydraulic oil pump - Check pump performance and change it if necessary.
Leaking hydraulic cylinder - Install new cylinder seals.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Add fluid as required.
Hydraulic control valve is faulty or out of adjustment - Set properly or repair.
Hydraulic pressure loss - Correct adjustment is required.

Lift arm or bucket is moving jerkily
Hydraulic system is leaking air - Bleed hydraulic system.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter element - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Dirty hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil.
Cylinder tube or rod scoring - Change damaged component.

Hydraulic pump is excessively noisy
Hydraulic leaks or low oil level - Top up hydraulic oil or remedy leakage in system.
Hydraulic filter is clogged - Clean or change the filter.
Clogged suction line - Need to clean the suction line.
Air trapped in hydraulic pump - Air bleeding is required.
Damaged pump components - Rebuild or install new pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery will not charge
Loose or corroded electrical wiring connections - Tighten or clean connections.
Electrical terminal connectors are defective - Install new terminal connectors.
Defective battery - Install a new battery.
Belt is worn or loose - Need to adjust belt tension or replace belt.

Starter cranks slow
Low battery voltage - Recharge the battery.
Battery will not hold charge - Service or change the battery.
Disconnected battery cables or bad terminals - Connect wiring correctly or install new terminals.

Starter motor won't turn
Battery is drained or defective - Charge or change the battery.
Wiring is improperly connected or disconnected - Check wiring and connect properly.
Battery voltage is low - Charge the battery.
Starter motor is faulty - Repair or change starter.
