Caterpillar 908H Troubleshooting

The Cat 908H compact wheel loader is powered by 201 cu.in (3.3L) Caterpillar C3.4 4-cylinder indirect injection diesel engine with a rated power of 79 hp (59 kW) at 2500 rpm. Engine Troubleshooting

Engine hard to start or will not start
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.

Engine shuts off suddenly while running
Engine not warmed up - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Fuel filter plugging - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Use the correct fuel injection pump timing adjustment.

Engine stalls when idling
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjust the low idle speed.
Fuel injection pump is damaged - Rebuild or install a new injection pump.
Defective fuel injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Excessive valve clearance - Have it adjusted.

Diesel engine loses power
Clogged air filter - Change or service air filter element.

Engine overheats

HST transmission is making noise

Stuck relief valve - Install a new valve.
Transmission overload - Reduce loading.

Low power
Transmission oil insufficient - Add oil to the transmission housing.

Transmission oil overheated
Transmission fluid insufficient - Fill the transmission housing to proper fluid level.
Transmission fluid filter is clogged - Service or change transmission fluid filter.
Clogged or damaged cooling components - Inspect all cooling components and replace or repair if necessary.
Transmission overloaded - Reduce the load is required.

Transmission oil leaking
Damaged seals or gaskets - Install new seal or gaskets.

Plugged oil return tube - Clean or replace return tube.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheated
Hydraulic pressure is not adjusted correctly - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.

Hydraulic pump is excessively noisy

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery won’t charge
Electrical wire connections are corroded or loose - Tighten or service cable connections.
Electrical terminal connectors are defective - Install new terminal connectors.
Defective battery - Install a new battery.
Damaged or loose belt - Belt needs to be adjusted or replaced.

Starter cranks slowly
Low battery power - Recharge the battery.
Battery runs out quickly - Service or replace the battery.
Disconnected cables or faulty battery terminals - Connect wires properly or change terminals.

Starter is not cranking
Battery is discharged or worn - Need to charge or replace the battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect cables and connect properly.
Battery voltage is low - Battery needs to be recharged.
Starter motor failure - Starter needs to be changed.
