Bobcat L85 Troubleshooting

The Bobcat L85 compact wheel loader is powered by Bobcat Doosan D24 4-cylinder direct injection turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 68 hp (50.7 kW). The Bobcat L85 is equipped with a hydrostatic transmission, power steering system, wet disc brakes, and 405/70R18 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 19.9 gpm (75.4 lpm) or 27.3 gpm (103.5 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 2975 psi (205 bar). The compact wheel loader has a rated operating capacity of 3465 lbs (1575 kg) and tipping load of 6930 lbs (3150 kg). The max lift height is 128" (3250 mm) to hinge pin, and breakout force is 10955 lbs (4980 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine hard to start or will not start
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Replace filter element.
Clogged or burnt injection nozzle - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Valve clearance is not correct - Check and adjust as required.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Install a new pump or rebuild.

Diesel starts and suddenly stops
Air filter is clogged - Install new air filter element.
Fuel filter plugging - Service or replace the filter.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Clogged or defective injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Fuel injection pump damage - Repair or replace injection pump.

Engine stops running suddenly
Engine is not warmed up to required temperature - Warm up to required temperature.
Dirty fuel filter - Install new filter element.
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.

Engine stops when idling
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Repair or change injection pump.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Improper valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.

Engine lacks power
Plugged air filter - Install new air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Uneven fuel injection pressure - Adjust pressure to proper level.
Improper valve clearance - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Fuel hoses or lines are clogged - Fuel lines and hoses need to be cleaned.
Cylinder head gasket defective - Replace the gasket as required.
Defective or worn piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine is overheated
Lack of coolant in cooling system - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Engine oil level low - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Faulty radiator cap or dirty radiator fins - Clean radiator or change cap.
Excessive wear of the fan belt - Belt change is required.
Diesel engine overloaded - Reduce engine load.

Oil pressure too low
Low crankcase oil level - Need to add oil.
Oil filter is dirty - Change or clean engine oil filter element.
Oil grade or viscosity is incorrect - Fill up with the correct oil viscosity.
Excessive crankshaft bearing oil clearance - Replace bearings.
Oil pump is worn or damaged - Replace as required.

Abnormal engine noise or knocking
Engine oil level is low - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Coolant temperature is low - Warm up the engine.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Adjustment required.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Connecting rod is worn or not aligned - Need to replace or align the connecting rod.
Pistons are worn or broken - Replace the pistons as required.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting

Hydrostatic transmission makes noise
Fluid is contaminated or fluid level is insufficient - Add fluid to the correct level or fill the transmission with fresh fluid.
Speed control linkage is defective or unadjusted - Adjust or repair linkage.
Defective relief valve - Replace valve as required.
Excessive transmission load - The load should be reduced.
Damaged or worn components of hydrostatic transmission - Check hydrostatic transmission components for defect or damage and change if necessary.

Power is insufficient
Insufficient transmission oil - Fill the transmission housing with oil.
Relief valve is damaged - Replace valve as required.
Speed control linkage is defective or unadjusted - Adjust or install new linkage.

Transmission fluid overheats
Lack of transmission oil supply - Add oil to the transmission housing.
Transmission oil filter is dirty - Service or replace the transmission oil filter.
Cooling components are plugged or defective - Check all cooling components and repair or change if required.
Excessive loading - Reduce loading.

External fluid leaks
Damaged gaskets or seals - Change defective gaskets or seal.
High internal transmission housing pressure - Repair or replace damaged components.
Clogged oil return pipe - Clean or change return pipe.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheating
Hydraulic pressure incorrectly adjusted - Correct setting is required.
Main relief valve is faulty or misadjusted - Adjust or replace the relief valve.
Hydraulic fluid is dirty - Change hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic oil level is insufficient - Add oil to the hydraulic system.
Faulty hydraulic oil pump - Repair or change pump if required.

Boom can't lift or drop
Lift controls failure - Repair or replace.
Hydraulic pump is broken - Replace or repair pump if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve failure - Repair or change the valve.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.

Bucket fails to tilt
Defective bucket controls - Repair or change.
Hydraulic pump not working - Repair or install new hydraulic pump.
Hydraulic control valve is defective - Replace or repair the valve.
Defective bucket cylinder - Repair or install a new cylinder.
Low hydraulic oil level - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.

Slow bucket or lift arm operation
Hydraulic pump is worn - Check the pump capacity and replace pump if required.
Hydraulic cylinder oil leakage - Repair leak by replacing the seals.
Hydraulic oil level low - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Hydraulic control valve is defective or set improper - Repair or set properly.
Hydraulic system loosing pressure - Hydraulic pressure must be set correctly.

Lift arm or bucket is jerky
Air leaks in hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter element - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic fluid is contaminated - The fluid must be changed.
Cylinder tube or rod is scored - Change damaged component.

Hydraulic pump is noisy
Low oil level or hydraulic leaks - Refill hydraulic oil or repair leaks in system.
Dirty hydraulic filter - Clean or install new filter.
Suction line clogging - Suction line needs to be cleaned.
Air enters the pump - Bleed air from hydraulics.
Worn pump components - Replace or rebuild the pump.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery won’t charge
Electrical cable connections are corroded or loose - Tighten or clean connections.
Defective battery terminal clamps - Install new terminal clamps.
Battery faulty cell - Change the battery.
Loose or worn belt - Belt needs to be adjusted or replaced.

Starter cranks slow
Low battery power - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery will not hold charge - Service charging system or change battery.
Bad battery terminals or disconnected wiring - Check cable connections and replace or service terminals.

Starter will not crank
Battery is drained or defective - Charge or replace the battery.
Battery wires are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wires and connect correctly.
Battery power is low - Battery is drained, charge it.
Starter motor failure - Repair or change starter.
